As on October 5th we celebrated 25 years of Jesuit presence in Ankara, on the patron saint’s day of our church, which our Assumptionist predecessors had dedicated to Saint Theresa of Lisieux, we remembered with gratitude all the companions who contributed to this adventure: Tom Michel and Christian Troll (who both prepared this adventure), Patrice Jullien de Pommerol (the founder), Herman Pillaert, John Lucal, Jean-Marc Balhan, Felix Körner, Oliver Borg Olivier, Antuan Ilgıt, Paolo Bizzeti, Arij Roest-Crollius, Alexis Doucet, Paul Brouwers, Stefan Hengst, Michael McGuckian and Changmo Cho.

الإثنين ٢٩ سبتمبر / أيلول نفتتح للمرّة الخامسة برنامج سنة الابتداء الثالثة الّذي يحمل اسم نيقولا كلويترز. السنة الماضية كان الافتتاح في القاهرة بسبب الظروف الأمنيّة. سبعة رفاق انضمّوا إلى جماعة بكفيّا فصرنا عشرة مع صلاح وربيع وأنا.

It was a very « Gerry » weekend with a mix of things that only Gerry’s life could bring together, a convergence of universes and peoples and languages and places. After leaving his regency ministry in Homs for Innsbruck and theology studies, the time finally came for Gerry’s priestly ordination at the Jesuit church in Innsbruck, surrounded by friends and family from all over Europe and, of course, Syria. Following the ordination itself – presided over by Michael Cardinal Czerny SJ – this lively diversity was on full display in the long line of guests waiting for his blessing after his first Mass – even the Provincial had to wait until another time to get his blessing.

Les activités du Cercle de la Jeunesse Catholique (CJC) continuent de se développer malgré les défis liés à la baisse des aides et des dons, due notamment à la fermeture de l’USAID et à la crise économique en Europe. Actuellement, le CJC compte 10 salariés, environ 65 bénévoles et soutient 367 familles à Beyrouth et 150 à Zahlé.

I am an American Jesuit, currently missoned as a third-year regent at Le Collège Notre Dame de Jamhour, where I teach English. I grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, a city located between New York and Philadelphia, and graduated from the University of Scranton, a Jesuit school, in 2013, where I first encountered the Jesuits and began discerning my vocation.

“Fr. Doug (Douglas) Jones, SJ is a member of the USA East Province (UEA). He was ordained a priest on June 14, 2025 in New York City. Originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Doug met the Jesuits while attending The University of Scranton. It was also at university that he spent a semester in Amman and fell in love with the Middle East. He entered the Society of Jesus in August 2016, after completing a doctorate in Middle East politics, which brought him back to Jordan for a year of research.

كعادة كلّ سنة التقى اليسوعيّون من القطر المصريّ في مرسى مطروح خلال الأسبوع الأخير من شهر أغسطس/ آب. عادةً ما يكون اللقاء فرصة للراحة واللقاء بين الرفاق، وفي اللقاء شاركنا بعض الرفاق اليسوعيّون حول رسالاتهم المتنوعة أو بعض الخبرات التي عاشوها مؤخرًا.

شهد نشاط “أغصان الكرمة” خلال صيف 2025 مجموعة من اللقاءات والمعسكرات التكوينية والروحية، التي استهدفت أعضاء ورواد النشاط من مختلف المراحل والمناطق. وامتدت عبر القاهرة، والإسكندرية، والصعيد، إلى جانب اللقاءات الإقليمية التي جمعت المشاركين من كافة المناطق.

منذ أن تلقيت دعوة المسير شعرت بحنين وفرح يشدني إلي الذهاب والتواجد ، لم تكن تلك هي زيارتي الأولي إلي لبنان ، ربما لهذا أدركت أن تلك الدعوة تتسم بطابع إستثنائي يشبه تلك البلد الحبيب وذلك الشعب المٌحِب ، البيسط والعميق في نفس الوقت ، المملوء بالرجاء برغم كثرة الألم.

     في يوم 23 أغسطس، تحت سماء القوصية بمحافظة أسيوط، وفي حضن كاتدرائيتها قلب يسوع الأقدس، عاش الجميع لحظات من الفرح الروحيّ، حيث أقيمت حفلة الرسامة الكهنوتية للأب ريمون عماد زكريا، ليُكرَس كاهنًا على مذبح الرب، ويبدأ مسيرته الجديدة في قلب رسالته الخدميّة. وقد تم ذلك بوضع يد صاحب النيافة الأنبا مرقس وليم، مطران ايبارشية القوصيّة للأقباط الكاثوليك.

L’histoire de la Province du Proche-Orient de la Compagnie de Jésus avec la Pastorale universitaire au Liban est ancienne. Dès 1979, le P. Saleh Nehmé, premier aumônier général, a posé les fondations de cette mission confiée par l’Assemblée des Patriarches et Évêques catholiques au Liban (APECL), mobilisant autour de lui plusieurs congrégations religieuses.

Pour commémorer les quatre-vingt-dix ans du groupe scout de Jamhour, quelques neuf cents scouts et guides se sont retrouvés sur le campus du collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour, pour un camp de quatre jours, du jeudi 10 au dimanche 13 juillet 2025. Il était bon que les quinze unités du groupe puissent fêter ensemble cet anniversaire, surtout après la COVID.

During my first month in Lebanon, I had the joy of working with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) and the Arrupe Migrant Service. These experiences allowed me to encounter people from diverse backgrounds—Syrian, South Sudanese, and Filipino communities—whose stories and resilience touched me deeply.

When the war on Lebanon intensified last September, especially in its southern region, thousands of Lebanese families fled from the South to Beirut and other “safe” areas of the country.

ذهبت الي مريوط بعد غياب سنوات كثيرة، كنت مشتاق للمكان و الذكريات و الاشخاص و الحياة التي عشتها هنا في مؤتمرات الرفاق و الرياضات الروحية. ذهبت و لاول مرة بدون فريق، ذهبت لابحث عن فريق و كنت اخشي ان لا اجده. البداية يوم الخميس كانت جميلة شعرت فيها بفرحة اللقاء، كأننا تركنا بعض بالامس القريب، شعرت بالالفة الغريبة الموجودة بين الاشخاص حتي و ان كان هناك اشخاص لا اعرفهم . في نهاية اليوم، في مراجعة الحياة check  in و السؤال ماذا تشعر الان؟ كان بداخلي احساس غير مفهوم بالراحة و الفرحة كأني موجود في المكان الذي يجب ان اكون فيه.

This morning, an Israeli military attack killed three people: Saad Issa Constandi Salameh, Najwa Abu Daoud and Phemia Ayyad. It wounded several others, including the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli, in the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Gaza. The church and its parish compound have served as a refuge for hundreds of people since the beginning of Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023. This is not the first time that the Roman Catholic church and the neighbouring Greek Orthodox church have been attacked, and people have been killed on their premises.

During a year marked by multiple crises and a devastating war that severely impacted Lebanese territories, particularly the South and Northeast Bekaa, the Agro- Humanitarian Center, inaugurated in 2023, maintained its critical role in supporting the resilience of surrounding communities within a 20 km radius.

Le Centre des Retraites, situé au cœur de la Békaa, joue un rôle central dans l’accueil de groupes spirituels, éducatifs et communautaires depuis de nombreuses années. À travers le calendrier d’activités sur les trois dernières années, il apparaît clairement que le centre est un espace vivant, au service de la formation humaine et spirituelle, enracinée dans la tradition ignatienne. Dans ce rapport, nous donnons un sketch sur les types d’activités, les périodes de fréquentation, ainsi que la diversité des publics accueillis.

مع ذهاب مبتدئي السنة الأولى، إلى خبرة العمل الرسولي في رعية ومستشفي قرية نزلة خاطر بمحافظة سوهاج، أُتيحت لي فرصة مميزة لزيارة ديري الابتداء في إقليم إسبانيا وأقليم اوربا المتوسطي، مدينة بلباو بإسبانيا ومدينة جنوا بإيطاليا. في البداية ظننت أنها مجرد فرصة للتعرّف على برامج التكوين المختلفة في إقليمين مختلفين، ولكن اتضح لي بأنها أكثر من ذلك.

يوم ٨ مارس / آذار ٢٠٢٠، حين دخلت البلاد تدريجيًّا في الحجر الصحّيّ بسبب جائحة كورونا، كلّمني أخي قائلًا “ها إنّ الناس تدخل بيوتها ولا تعرف كيف تقضي وقتها… هوذا الوقت المناسب لرياضة روحيّة في البيت.” وهكذا نشأت رياضة “خلّيك بالبيت”. من خلال الفايسبوك والواتسآب، أرسلتُ يوميًّا، ولمدّة ستّ عشرة يومًا، نصًّا يحتوي فكرة روحيّة واقتراح تأمّل في الإنجيل. وانتشرت تلك الرياضة انتشارًا واسعًا في الأوساط العربيّة في العالم كلّه. ممّا شجّعني على أن أرسل سنويًّا بالطريقة نفسها تساعيّة تأمّليّة قبل عيد الميلاد ورياضة روحيّة بيتيّة خلال أسبوع الآلام.

اختتم المركز اليسوعي برنامجه التكويني الموجه للشباب لعام 2024-2025، والذي شمل رحلات حج رسولية إلى ستة مواقع مسيحية ذات أهمية روحية وكتابية مفصلية. يندرج هذا البرنامج ضمن برامج تكوينية تعزز الخبرة الروحية للشباب، مما يتيح لهم فرصة النمو في المعرفة الكتابية وتعميق حياتهم الروحية.

يهدف “جيل المستقبل” في المنيا إلى دعم هؤلاء الشباب الجامعيّين في رحلتهم ليصبحوا قياديّين واعين بذواتهم، منفتحين على الآخر، ومؤثّرين إيجابيًّا في مجتمعاتهم. نحن نسعى لرفع وعيهم الثقافيّ والاجتماعيّ، وتنمية روح الخدمة لديهم، وتعزيز قدراتهم الإنسانيّة، وإطلاق خيالهم وإبداعهم. يتميّز البرنامج بأنّه يضمّ شباب من خلفيّات وثقافات مختلفة.

J’ai eu l’occasion de participer, avec Salim Daccache, Recteur de l’USJ, à l’Association Internationale des Universités Jésuites (IAJU) qui s’est tenu à Bogota du 30 juin au 4 juillet dernier.

“أبانا الذي في السماوات…”، كانت هذه الكلمات حاضرة في أحاديثي الأولى مع جيرالد بومغارتنر(أو جيري) حين تعرّفتُ إليه في مصر في بداية سنة 2021. كانت خبرتي الرسوليّة الكبيرة في الابتداء في مدرسة العائلة المقدّسة، وجيري وصل إليها ليدرس اللغة العربيّة ضمن تحضيرات فترة تدريبه الرسوليّ التي أجراها في حمص في سوريا. كان يردّد صلاة الأبانا أمامي ليتأكّد إن كان لفظه صحيحًا.

La consulte de province s’est tenue du 6 au 8 juin à Taanayel au Liban. Le beau cadre de la maison est propice à la méditation, la réflexion et les conversations spontanées entre nous. Depuis un certain temps, nous avons pris l’habitude de commencer la consulte par un échange fraternel pour dire comment nous arrivons à la rencontre et ce que nous portons. Ensuite le père provincial met les consulteurs au courant de ce qu’il a fait et de ce qui s’est passé depuis la dernière consulte. Les consulteurs font de même aussi.

في إطار جولاتها الميدانية الهادفة إلى تعزيز التواصل مع الشركاء المحليين والفاعلين في القطاع الإنساني، قامت السيدة هند قبوات، وزيرة الشؤون الاجتماعية والعمل، بزيارة رسميّة إلى دير الآباء اليسوعيين في مدينة حمص حيث التقت برئيس الدير الأب مراد أبو سيف، والأب طوني حمصي مدبّر الدير، ومدير الملتقى الثقافيّ اليسوعيّ ومشروع حوار من أجل السلام، والأب إميل جبرائيل تقي اليسوعيّ مسؤول مركز المخلّص ونشاط التعليم الدينيّ، ومجموعة من العاملين في البرامج الاجتماعية والخيرية التابعة له.

The Arrupe Migrant Center (AMC) of the Society of Jesus joyously celebrated the 21st May. Flower Festival (Flores de Mayo) on a sunny Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the St. Joseph Parish in Achrafieh, Beirut. May, a month dedicated to honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, saw a vibrant display of devotion and cultural richness through the May Flower Festival and the captivating Santacruzan. The event featured a procession of queens, each one a reflection of the rich history of our faith, parading gracefully in festive attire.

في 23 مايو، احتفل تطبيق الصلاة باللغة العربية ”في طريقي أصلي“ بالذكرى السنوية الخامسة لإطلاقه بقداس ترأسه الأب الرئيس الإقليميّ مايكل زمّيط اليسوعيّ. تم إطلاق التطبيق في عام 2020 من قبل اليسوعيين وجماعة الحياة المسيحيّة – سي في إكس مصر، ويصل التطبيق الآن إلى أكثر من 14000 مستخدم في 120 دولة، ويقدم التطبيق مدونات صوتية يومية للصلاة على الطريقة الإغناطيّة.

Du 6 au 8 juin, pendant les congés de l’Aïd el Kabir, nous avons eu la réunion de tous les jésuites d’Algérie à Constantine. En cette année jubilaire, nous nous sommes inspirés de la manière dont cet événement est célébré dans nos diocèses (manière très ignatienne puisque les 3 temps proposés sont : rendre grâce / vivre la réconciliation / avancer dans l’espérance) pour partager nos nouvelles.

دخلتُ مرحلة دراسة الفلسفة وأنا أحمل في قلبي تساؤلات عديدة: لماذا ندرس الفلسفة في تكويننا الرهباني؟ وهل نحن بحاجة فعلًا إلى الفلسفة في واقعنا اليوم؟ وهل تخدم رسالتنا في خدمة الآخرين؟ وكوني أرغب في أن أسير في خطوات نحو أن أكون راهبًا يسوعيًا، أقدّم حياتي لله في خدمة الآخرين، كان سؤالي واضحًا: بماذا ستفيدني الفلسفة في هذا المسار؟

كان فضول دراسة الفلسفة هو فضول يسبق بداية الحياة الرهبانية، والسؤال الذي طرحته على نفسي عندما طلبت الرهبنة اليسوعية مني دراسة الفلسفة كجزء من التكوين الشخصي هو ماذا أريد من الفلسفة؟ وخاصة بغياب وجود أي خلفية مسبقة عن الفلسفة.

لم تكنْ رحلتي الجامعيةُ مجرّدَ تَحصيلٍ أكاديميّ، بل تحوّلًا في الوعي والذاتِ، وسيرًا في دربِ البحثِ عن المعنى والغايةِ في عالمٍ تتسارعُ فيه وتيرةُ الحياةِ وتزدادُ التحدّياتُ. سأروي لكم فصولَها من السنَةِ الأولى إلى نهايةِ هذه المرحلةِ التي بدأتْ ولم تنتهِ.

حين أستعيد مشواري الجامعي في بيروت، أشعر بامتنان عميق يغمرني. لقد كانت هذه الرحلة أكثر من مجرّد مرحلة دراسيّة، بل كانت تجربة حيّة وممتعة أثرتني على كل المستويات. عشت خلالها حياة جامعيّة نابضة، لا في الكتب والمحاضرات فقط، بل في العلاقات واللقاءات، في اللحظات الصغيرة والمواقف الكبيرة، في الأسئلة التي طرحتها، وفي الأجوبة التي وُلدت من رحم النقاش.

حين طُلب مني المشاركة في ندوة بعنوان «منتصف العمر: ولادة جديدة»، بدت لي الفكرة للوهلة الأولى موضوعًا إنسانيًا عامًا. لكن سرعان ما اكتشفت، مع كلمات الأب نادر ميشيل اليسوعي، أنني لست أمام محاضرة فكرية فحسب، بل في مسار داخلي عميق، شخصي ومحرِّر.

Du 21 au 22 juin 2025, une quinzaine de jésuites du Liban se sont retrouvés à Karm-Saddeh (région de Zghorta), à une centaine de kilomètres de Beyrouth, pour leur week-end régional annuel, certains zélés les ayant précédés déjà le 20 au soir. Le cadre paisible du couvent — qui accueille encore un séminaire, moins exigeant que celui de Ghazir — avec sa cour intérieure verdoyante et sa vue imprenable sur la plaine de la Koura, a offert un écrin idéal à cette rencontre fraternelle.

لطالما ذيَّل القديسُ إغناطيوس دي لويولا رسائلَهُ إلى تلاميذه بنداءٍ مُلهِم: “Ite, inflammate omnia – اذهبوا وأشعلوا العالم نارًا”. وما كانت النار في رؤيته سوى رمزٍ لنورٍ ربَّاني، لا يحرق بل يضيء، لا يُفنِي بل يوقظ؛ نورٌ يُبددُ ظُلمات الجهل واللامبالاة، ويُلهبُ القلب توقًا إلى المعرفة والخدمة. ومن هذا المعين الروحيّ المتدفق، انبثق شعار كيرماس الجزويت 2025: “نور في آخر النفق… مكملين ضد التيار”، ليس كشعارٍ رنّان، بل كموقف نابع من رؤية تؤمن بأن في وسط الظلام دومًا بصيص نور لمن يملك البصيرة.

Du point de vue de la Compagnie de Jésus en Algérie, l’apport majeur du pape François sur dans le dialogue interreligieux est certainement la déclaration sur la Fraternité humaine, publiée le 4 février 2019 à Abou Dhabi, et écrite conjointement avec Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, grand imam d’al-Azhar. Fruit de la rencontre interpersonnelle entre deux responsables religieux, cette déclaration commence par « La foi amène le croyant à voir dans l’autre un frère à soutenir et à aimer ». Elle confirme les Eglises d’Afrique du Nord dans leur mission d’Eglises de la rencontre avec le monde musulman. Le voyage du Pape au Maroc, fin mars 2019, a donné davantage de chair à cette déclaration, qui veut proposer un chemin de rencontre, au moment où d’autres cherchent aviver les tension entre chrétiens et musulmans.

L’école n’est pas seulement un lieu d’apprentissage, d’information et d’instruction… c’est encore le premier vecteur pour découvrir ses talents… se connecter avec l’environnement extérieur… développer sa personnalité… en un mot, se retrouver…

Le 5 janvier 1964, eut lieu une rencontre historique entre le Pape Paul VI et Athénagoras 1er, Patriarche Oecuménique de Constantinople. Un an après, il y a donc près de 60 ans aujourd’hui, fut lue à Rome et à Istanbul une Déclaration commune de ces mêmes Pape et Patriarche, qui exprimait leur décision d’enlever de la mémoire et de l’Eglise les sentences d’excommunication de l’année 1054. En juillet 1967, Paul VI s’est alors rendu pour deux jours en Turquie où il a rencontré les autorités civiles et religieuse du pays, en particulier le Patriarche, et la communauté catholique.

The iconic gesture of Pope Francis stooping down to touch the water at the Baptism Site of Jesus in Jordan highlights the importance of Francis’ Apostolic Journey to the Holy Land in 2014 as well as his personal embodiment of a servant Church that kneels to serve. The three-day pilgrimage, which took place from May 24-26, 2014, marked the 50th anniversary of the historic meeting between Pope Paul VI and Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras in Jerusalem on January 6, 1964.

Le pape François s’est rendu en Égypte les 28 et 29 avril 2017, à l’invitation d’Al-Azhar, pour participer à la « Conférence internationale pour la paix ». Il s’agissait de la première visite d’un pape dans le pays depuis celle de Jean-Paul II en 2000. Cette visite est intervenue dans un contexte marqué par les attentats du Dimanche des Rameaux contre les églises coptes d’Alexandrie et de Tanta (située à mi-chemin entre Le Caire et Alexandrie, dans le delta du Nil). Le choix de maintenir ce voyage malgré les risques fut un geste à la fois prophétique et pastoral.

J’ai recueilli ces témoignages en préparation de la lettre qu’il devait recevoir du père général à l’occasion de ses 50 ans de Compagnie. Il est parti avant de la recevoir. Il fêtera son jubilé au Ciel avec Ignace et tous les saints de la Compagnie.

As the war in Gaza continues, Israel has launched a war in the West Bank, hidden from the eyes of the world. The Israeli army is carrying out the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank from their homes since 1967. According to OCHA, already over 40, 000 Palestinians have been displaced, and are currently living without shelter, essential services, and healthcare.

Il y a cinq ans, après une période de discernement, nous avons reçu les Préférences apostoliques universelles 2019-2029 (PAU) du pape François. Dans sa lettre de mission à la Compagnie de Jésus, le pape François aconfirmé que ces préférences s’alignent sur les priorités de l’Église telles qu’elles sont exprimées par le magistère ordinaire du pape, les synodes et les conférences épiscopales, en particulier depuis la publication de l’exhortation apostolique Evangelii Gaudium.

Le décès du pape François a profondément marqué la consulte provinciale qui s’est tenue à Beyrouth du 21 au 23 avril. Tout juste après le début de nos travaux, la triste nouvelle tombe : le pape François est mort ce lundi de Pâques. Il nous a fallu prendre un moment de silence et de recueillement avant de pouvoir reprendre la consulte. Ensuite en concertation avec le P. Denis Meyer, préfet de l’église St-Joseph, une messe de requiem a été décidée pour le mardi 22 avril. Une grande foule est venue se recueillir avec nous et rendre grâce pour le don qu’a fait le Seigneur à son Église dans la personne du pape François.

Living and studying in Rome has given me a privileged vantage point into both the international character of the Society of Jesus and the deep catholicity, the universality, of the Church. Within my own community, I have shared life with Jesuits from every continent, each bringing their own history, theological intuitions, and pastoral practices. This experience has stretched my heart and broadened my mind. At the same time, being in Rome allows me to experience the universal Church not as a distant institution but as a living, breathing communion of cultures and voices.

حتّى هذه اللحظة، لا أعلم ما هو عنوان خبرتي الشخصيّة… ربّما الأنسب في بدايتها كانت ” دعوة الربّ بين رماد الحرب ونور الكلمة”، واليوم وأنا في سنتي الأولى لدراسة اللاهوت، أضع عنوانًا جديدًا، عنوانًا فكريًّا ” البحث عن الله “، أبحث عنه في كلّ مقال وكتاب ومحاضرة.

اليوم نجتمع لنودع رفيقنا في الإيمان والخدمة، الأب بولس دياب، الذي عاش حياته كشهادة حية للإنجيل، محبةً وخدمةً. في هذا اليوم الحزين، نجد عزاءنا في الإيمان بأن رفيقنا الأب بولس قد انضم إلى بيت الآب، حيث لا حزن ولا ألم، بل فرح أبدي في حضرة الرب.

في الأول من شهر نسيان ولمدة ثلاثة أيام أقيمت الندوة الثالثة ضمن برنامج (Inter-noviciat) هذه الندوة التي تجمع بيوت الابتداء في مصر من عدَّة رهبانيات رجاليَّة ونسائيَّة. بعنوان نذر العفة الذي قدَّمه الأب نادر ميشيل اليسوعي.

قام فوّاز يوم الاثنين 24 آذار/مارس 2025 بإبراز النذور الأولى، وكان وقت الاستعداد للنذور مميزًا للغاية. فقد استقبلنا في جماعة القديس أغناطيوس الرئيس العام للرهبنة اليسوعية، وهو اللقاء الذي منحنا فرصة للتأمل والتعمّق في معنى الحياة الرهبانية والنذور.

Après avoir obtenu l’accord pour mon projet de thèse, j’ai dû me prépa-rer pour ma « Lectio Coram ». Selon les normes de l’Institut Pontificale Oriental (PIO), un an après l’approbation du projet, l’étudiant est invité à présenter une conférence publique sur le thème de sa thèse, appelée « Lec-tio Coram », devant une Commission de trois membres nommés par le Doyen. La Lectio prend la forme d’un débat entre le doctorant et la Com-mission. Celle-ci, après une évaluation approfondie, émettra un avis écrit contraignant pour la poursuite du doctorat.

It is both an honor and a privilege to address you today and to share with you the mission, dedication, and ongoing efforts of the CJC family in Zahlé.

Au début, je ne connaissais pas précisément la mission du CJC ni son lien avec les Jésuites. Pourtant, en tant qu’ancienne élève de leurs écoles, je savais une chose : ils ne ferment jamais leur porte à ceux qui frappent. Mais ce n’est que lorsque j’ai commencé à travailler avec eux que j’ai compris la profondeur de leur engagement. J’ai découvert qu’ils ne se contentent pas d’être aux côtés des plus fragiles : ils y sont, pleinement, avec humilité et sincérité, sans chercher ni reconnaissance ni lumière. Ils ne parlent pas de solidarité, ils la vivent.

Venant de Minia le vendredi 21 mars après-midi, le P. Arturo SOSA s’est entretenu pendant une heure avec les responsables du MEJ et de la CVX.

From March 20 to 21, Father Arturo Sosa, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), visited Minia, Egypt, as part of his journey to witness and support the Jesuit mission in the region. This visit highlighted the longstanding commitment of the Jesuits to social, educational, and spiritual development in Upper Egypt, particularly through the work of the Jesuit community in Minia.

The Jesuit community in Amman, Jordan, is made up of three members: one from India, one from Egypt, and one from Malta. Together, they are the smallest group of Jesuits among all the countries that make up the Near East and Maghreb Province (PRO) of the Society.

L’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ) a eu l’honneur d’accueillir, les 18 et 19 mars 2025, le T.R.P. Arturo Sosa Abascal s.j., Supérieur général de la Compagnie de Jésus, pour une visite exceptionnelle marquant à la fois les 150 ans et la Saint Joseph, fête patronale de l’Université.

La visite que le Père Arturo Sosa a faite à la communauté Saint-Ignace a eu un impact profond sur chacun de nous, scolastiques de la Compagnie. Cet impact a dépassé toutes nos attentes. Ce ne fut pas simplement une rencontre pastorale ou une visite officielle, ce fut surtout une rencontre fraternelle.

A few months ago, when bombs were falling on the country and on Beirut, it was uncertain whether I could be with you on this occasion. Yet, I deeply wished it would be possible. Today, I am truly delighted that the situation, which has so profoundly changed since then, allows me to be here. I am very pleased to be able to join you in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut and, through this celebration, to express the deep attachment and esteem of the Society of Jesus.

The celebration of the Feast of Saint Joseph and the 150th anniversary of Saint Joseph University present a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the name of our university and the inspiration it carries.

Dear Rachel,
I have just received horrifying news about what happened in Bethlehem after Joseph, the child, and I left that night… The king’s soldiers came and slaughtered the children without mercy. Neither the mothers’ pleas nor the fathers’ courage could stop them!

As you will be visiting the CJC tomorrow and seeing how the Society of Jesus in Lebanon is responding to this crisis effectively, I would like to share with you how I, as a Jesuit, experience this impoverishment of the Lebanese population on a spiritual and human level.

On the first day when the war escalated here in Beirut, a mother from our parish called me. “Brother, if it gets bad can we come stay in the church?” She her children were living in Dahiyye, a neighborhood that was likely to face heavy bombing if the war picked up.

In the following lines, I will share my personnal experience with the uprising that took place on the midst of October 2019. For those who are coming from abroad, the protests took place here, just few meters away. So, I couldn’t stay in my room and watch the event through my window. The temptation to join the gathered people was so great and noble.

The blast in the port of Beirut was not just one of many that I have experienced, sometimes very closely, as a war child. Beirut blast on 4 august 2020 was an earthquake, an upheaval, an apocalypse.

The October 17, 2019 revolution in Lebanon was a profound experience for me, filled with enthusiasm, contradictions, personal challenges, and deep wounds. From the very first days, I was swept up by the momentum of Lebanese youth dreaming of a better country, free from corruption and systemic injustices. Their energy, determination, and hope were contagious, and I felt immense joy in being among them, sharing their struggle, and marching alongside them in the streets of Beirut and other cities.

Today, I want to share with you how Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour faced and survived some of the worst crises in Lebanon’s history. Between 2017 and 2023, Lebanon experienced political turmoil, economic collapse, social unrest, and national disasters—each one threatening the very existence of its institutions, especially schools. Yet, despite these challenges, Jamhour endured, adapted, and even thrived, thanks to the support of some Jesuits, friends, families and benefactors. Let’s look at how the school navigated each crisis.

I will speak about what the recent war between Hezbollah and Israel stirred within me. Like many Lebanese—perhaps all—I felt a deep and overwhelming uncertainty about what this war would mean for our country. This uncertainty was already deeply rooted, given the more than two-year-long presidential vacuum and the gradual disintegration of state institutions.

قام الملتقى الثقافي اليسوعيّ في حمص، بالتعاون مع منتدى مساحة الدعوة إلى لقاء حواريّ مع الآباء اليسوعيّين في حمص: مراد أبو سيف، طوني حمصي، إميل جبرائيل بشأن بيان الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة في سوريا “وطننا يتعافى”، وذلك في مركز المخلّص – العدويّة يوم الاثنين ٢٤ شباط ٢٠٢٥. وقد حضر هذه الندوة كثيرون من شركاء اليسوعيّين في الرسالة والصلاة، وكذلك بعض من نشطاء المجتمع، الباحثين عن مساحات مشتركة في وطن هو بأمسّ الحاجة إلى الحوار.

في يوم الأحد الموافق 12 كانون الثاني (يناير)، اجتمع مجموعة من الدارسين اليسوعيين، في مرحلة التدريب الرسوليّ، من مصر ولبنان والولايات المتحدة الأميركية في لقاء عبر الفيديو لمناقشة تجاربهم في الحياة الرسولية والتحديات التي يواجهونها. شارك في اللقاء جوزيف أشرف ورودي خليل الدارسَين في مصر، ومايكل جبريال ومايكل بيترو في لبنان، ودانيال عطالله في سوريا. وذلك تحت إشراف الأب ريكاردو خيمينيز، مسؤول التكوين في الإقليم.

Dans un Proche-Orient tourmenté, plus de 400 000 élèves trouvent une stabilité entre les murs des écoles catholiques francophones. Des lieux d’apprentissage scolaire, de promotion de la francophonie mais aussi de transmission, de résilience et d’espérance.

قرر المجلس العالمي لجماعة الحياة المسيحية (CVX) عقد اجتماعه السنوي الحضوري في مصر من 31 يناير حتى 9 فبراير 2025 في بيت الراهبات الكمبونيات قي المقطم الذي كان حسن استقبالهن لنا أساس نجاح هذا اللقاء. والهدف الأساسي من هذا الاختيار خلق مساحة للقاء الجماعة في مصر والشعور مع الجماعة في الشرق الأوسط.

في جو من الصلاة والتأمل والفرح كان لي فرح لقاء مع حوالي 90 شخصًا شاركوا في الندوة الثامنة عشر التي يعدّها الأب نادر ميشيل اليسوعي ويقدّمها سنويًا ليتبعها بعام نشر كتاب يحمل العنوان نفسه. التقيت مثل كل عام بمن أطلق أنا عليهم أغصان مختلفة في كرمة يسوع وذلك ما بين علمانيين – وأنا منهم – ومكرّسين يعملون في مجالات مختلفة وكذلك ورهبان وراهبات من 15 رهبانية و9 بلدان. عقدت الندوة هذا العام في بيت راهبات القديس يوسف بالعبور من الخميس ٢٣– الأحد ٢٦ يناير ٢٠٢٥. التقينا سويًا نحيي من لم نقابلهم منذ عام أو اثنين نشارك ما وصلنا إليه في حياتنا وخدمتنا ونرحب بمن يحضرون الندوة للمرة الأولى.

“I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church,” we profess in the Creed. But where is the one true Church to be found? The Orthodox claim that theirs is the one true Church, as do the Roman Catholics. Which is correct? There cannot be two true Churches, so it would seem that, to be a member of the one true Church, one has to choose either to be an Orthodox or a Roman Catholic.

More than one of the five Tertians enrolled in the Nicholas Kluiters European Tertianship Programme had to hear that question from friendly companions. Thankfully, the common response was a big smile. Eziokwu, Artur, Shigi, Matthew and Krystian met in Cairo last September for the launching of the 2024-2025 class.

يجتمع المجلس العالمي للـ CVX-CLCمرة كل عام، حضوريا، لمراجعة خطة العمل وتقييم الأنشطة ومناقشة عدة موضوعات أدارية وكذا التمييز في أمور كثيرة تخص الجماعات حول العالم. وعادةً ما يتم هذا اللقاء السنوي في روما. ولكن هذا العام كان الأمر مختلفًا.

Jésuites en Syrie, nous faisons partie du peuple syrien avec lequel et pour lequel nous travaillons. Nos préoccupations sont les siennes, et nos rêves sont les siens… Nous sommes peut-être libérés du régime, mais pas encore de la peur. Nous recherchons le dialogue national, mais la perception que nous avons les uns des autres est encore déformée, car la fraternité a été blessée et ces blessures ne sont pas encore cicatrisées. Aujourd’hui, nous devons emprunter, ensemble, résolument, un chemin de guérison.

We, the Jesuits in Syria, believe that we are an integral part of the Syrian people with and for whom we work. Our concerns are their concerns, and our dreams are their dreams, too… We believe we are free from the regime, but we are not yet free from fear. We believe we are free from the system, but we are not yet free from fear. We seek national dialogue, but our perception of each other is still distorted, as the wounds to fellowship have not yet healed. Today, we need a healing process that we can consciously walk together.

نؤمن نحن اليسوعيّين في سوريا بأنّنا جزءٌ لا يتجزّأ من الشعب السوريّ الّذي نعمل معه ولأجله، فهمومنا من همومه، وأحلامنا من أحلامه… نعتقد أنّنا تحرّرنا من النظام، ولكنّنا لم نتحرّر بعد من الخوف. لقد صدحت الكلمات، ولكنّنا لم نولِ بعد الأولويّة للصالح العامّ. فنحن نسعى لحوارٍ وطنيّ لكن نظرتنا لبعضنا لا تزالُ مشوشةً، إذ لم تلتئم بعدُ جراحُ الأخوّة. لذلك، نحن اليوم بحاجة إلى مسيرةِ تعافٍ نسيرها معًا بوعيٍ.

كان يومًا غنيًّا بالروحانيّة، والثقافة، والفرح في قلب دمشق أقدم عواصم العالم. فبمناسبة عيد اهتداء القديس بولس، أمضى مربّو التعليم المسيحيّ في أديرة الآباء اليسوعيّين في حمص (دير القدّيس يوحنّا فرنسيس ريجيس، ودير المخلّص) نهارًا مميّزًا للاحتفال بالقدّيس بولس رسول الأمم.

“إنّ التقدمة التي يقدّمها أهلنا… لا تقلّ صعوبة عن التقدمة التي نقوم بها لاتّباع المسيح”، هذا هو الردّ الذي أجابني به أحد الآباء اليسوعيّين في أثناء حوار معه قبل دخولي الرهبنة اليسوعيّة، وتفكيري بما يعيشه الأهالي عندما يبدأ ابنهم هذه الرحلة.

Le traditionnel repas annuel de nos parents a eu lieu le vendredi 10 janvier 2025. Cette année, nous nous sommes retrouvés un vendredi, jour de congé, ce qui a permis d’accueillir un plus grand nombre de participants.

A la fin de l’année 2024, fin octobre et début décembre, j’ai accepté de donner deux retraites a des prêtres diocésains, l’une pour ceux d’Assiout et l’autre pour ceux de Souhag. Compte tenu de leur emploi du temps, chaque retraite a eu lieu du lundi au jeudi. Ce fut une expérience enrichissante qui m’a poussé à réfléchir sur ce service d’Eglise.

احتفل مركز الجزويت التربويّ لخدمات الشباب YES (Youth Educational Services) بمرور خمس سنوات على افتتاحه يوم 28/12/2019. ويهدف المركز إلى تكوين شبابٍ واعٍ مفكّرٍ وملتزم. فيستوحي المركز غاية وجوده من روحانيّة الآباء اليسوعيّين التي ترغب في تكوين إنسان لأجل الآخرين ومعهم.

اجتمعت مجموعة “دو ريف” في تونس بين 30 ديسمبر و4 يناير.
كنا 10: 4 من الجزائر، 2 من تركيا، 2 من المغرب، 1 من إسبانيا و1 من إيطاليا. بالنسبة للجزء الأكبر، كنا منتظمين للمجموعة، باستثناء “فيكتور راموس”، الذي شارك لأول مرة.

تمّ وضع هذه الدورة مع الأخت نهى دكّاش، من القلبين الأقدسين، وهي كانت باكورة الدورات النفسية الروحية التي أطلقها ”مركز الفنون الروحية“ في بكفيا منذ عام ٢٠١٢. منذ ذلك الحين تقام هذه الدورة دون توقّف كلّ سنة في لبنان، حتّى خلال فترة الكورونا. وسرعان ما خرجت من نطاق الحدود إلى سوريا والأردن والبلاد المجاورة.

À l’occasion du tricentenaire de la division du patriarcat grec (rūm) d’Antioche en 1724, un ouvrage collectif intitulé La division du patriarcat grec d’Antioche et la construction des identités confessionnelles orthodoxe et catholique a été publié. Fruit de la collaboration entre le Pontificio Istituto Orientale (PIO) et le Centre de documentation et de recherches arabes chrétiennes de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (Cedrac – USJ), cet ouvrage, édité sous la direction du père Željko Paša, S.J., du professeur Bernard Heyberger et du père Ronney el Gemayel, S.J., regroupe les contributions de 18 chercheurs spécialisés.

L’année 2024 a été particulièrement violente dans notre région.  Nous avons vu la destruction de Gaza, et la violence dans la Cisjordanie. La région frontalière israélo-libanaise a été continuellement bombardée avec des centaines de milliers de personnes qui ont dû quitter leurs habitations des deux côtés de la frontière. Fin septembre 2024 cette guerre a franchi un nouveau palier avec des bombardements israéliens de la banlieue sud, étendus rapidement à tout le Liban où il y avait des membres de Hezbollah.

La consulte de province s’est réunie du 29 novembre au 1er décembre 2024 à Saint-Joseph à Beyrouth.

إن الساعات الأولى من سقوط النظام في سوريا، اختلطت فيها ثلاثة مشاعر لدى العديد من الناس ومنهم نحن. تمازج كلّ من الصدمة تّجاه سرعة الأحداث، والفرح تّجاه عبءٍ أُزيل عن صدر الحريّة، وتساؤلٍ لا يخلو من القلق عمّا ستحمله الأيّام القادمة.

At Christmastime, the Church celebrates new beginnings—Christ’s coming into the world, when everything is made new. But as Christians, we also believe that these new beginnings are a continuation—the fulfillment of God’s tireless work among us, an answer to ancient promises and eternal yearnings. This December, the Jesuits of Lebanon had the chance to celebrate a development in one of our missions in exactly this way—a change that is at once new and familiar, fulfilling old promises and building new opportunities.

« Marcher aux côtés des pauvres et des exclus » est la deuxième des quatre Préférences apostoliques universelles, l’une des orientations que suivent les jésuites dans leurs missions pour servir au mieux le monde et l’Église. Elle récuse toute recherche d’élitisme et demande, non pas de travailler pour ou en faveur des pauvres, mais de marcher à côté d’eux, à côté de notre monde et des personnes blessées dans leur dignité, en promouvant une mission de réconciliation et de justice.
