Nous entrons aujourd’hui dans la Semaine Sainte. Ayant célébré l’entrée triomphale de Jésus à Jérusalem, nous avons lu sa Passion selon Saint Matthieu. La joie et la fête sont derrière nous et nous entrons dans le mystère de Jésus qui se donne entièrement pour nous sauver. En attendant la Résurrection, c’est ce don de soi total — et la souffrance qui en découle — qui retient toute notre attention.

كل راهب يسوعي فور انضمامه للرهبنة يكون في مرحلة الابتداء. ومن مراحل التكوين أن في عامه الثاني للابتداء يذهب في خبرة طويلة. وعليه فقد كان محدد لي أن أرسل إلى مدينة المنيا لقضاء وقت خبرتي هناك حيث يوجد مُجمع به دير اليسوعيين، ملحق بمدرسة الآباء اليسوعيين، وجمعية “الجزويت والفرير” التنموية، ومبنى لتكوين الشباب. وعلى مسافة 20 دقيقة سيرًا على الأقدام، جنوبًا من/قبلي المدرسة يوجد مبنى الفرير بمنطقة جاد السيد الذي فيه تتم أنشطة تعليمية وتربوية لأهل المنطقة. ويُدعى الفرير نسبة لأول من أسسه الفرير شمعون اليسوعي لبناني الأصل.

من قلب يفيض بالشكر والامتنان المؤمن للثالوث القدوس الآب والابن والروح القدس الحاضر معي وفيَّ ومن خلالي برحمة لا توصف وحبٍ لا محدود، مصدر حياتي وغايتها. وبامتنان كبير للرهبانية اليسوعية وسخائها الكبير في مجال التنشئة والتكوين، التي اتاحت لي فرصة عيش الخبرة الكبيرة في جماعتين مختلفتين، في حين أن الهدف الأساسي لهذه الخبرة في كلا الجماعتين كان التركيز على تعلم اللغة الفرنسية التي أنا بأشد الحاجة إلى معرفتها وتعلمها، والتي درستها في معهد إتوال الخاص للغة لمدة 6 أسابيع، وقد كان وقتاً مثمراً للغاية، وعليه لم يكن لي من فرصة للمشاركة في عمل رسولي معين، إلا ما كان يُطلب مني بطريقة شخصية.
As you will be visiting the CJC tomorrow and seeing how the Society of Jesus in Lebanon is responding to this crisis effectively, I would like to share with you how I, as a Jesuit, experience this impoverishment of the Lebanese population on a spiritual and human level.
First of all, the feeling of responsibility: I cannot remain indifferent to the misery into which the Lebanese population has been plunged, not only as a Jesuit but also as a human being. What action can be taken to serve these people? And how can we endure a crisis whose end is not in sight but only continues to intensify?
A feeling of helplessness in the face of the magnitude of the damage. Certainly, I am supported by my religious institution, my fellow Jesuits, and my friends, but I feel deeply how the absence of a functioning state is significant, and how the scale of the damage far exceeds my efforts. And yet, it is there, in this very helplessness, that Christ is waiting for me. And it is there that I must act.
To this feeling of helplessness is added a feeling of anger and indignation at the absence of a clear statement from the Church institution regarding the greatest theft of the century, in which banks have frozen the money of their depositors. The silence of the Church leaders is heavy, even though from time to time we hear a homily condemning this state of affairs. To my knowledge, no official document has been published by the group of patriarchs denouncing this situation.
Thus, the challenge is one of hope: To maintain hope in the face of a crisis that persists and deepens; moreover, the end of the tunnel is nowhere in sight. It is not only about keeping hope for myself but also for the team around me and for the people I visit.
In fact, I visit impoverished people in their homes, especially in the Bekaa, along with volunteers. Additionally, families displaced from the south have been welcomed at the CJC that you will be visiting tomorrow. I have been present to listen to them as a priest and a Jesuit, and their testimonies are often harsh and heartbreaking.
Then comes the question: What words of hope can I offer them in the face of their misery and anxiety about the future? How can I tell them that Christ is by their side? How can I reveal to them the love and tenderness of God? And this is where the Church is expected to act.
I conclude with these words from Isaiah 40: “Comfort, comfort my people” and with the beginning of the second week of the Spiritual Exercises, in which the Trinity looks upon the world: How will it see the companions of Jesus act? And as a Jesuit, do I look upon these people as the Trinity looks upon them? I know this may seem presumptuous, but it is the grace I continually ask for.

برنامج القيادة الإغناطيّة
في بيت الرياضات الروحية بمدينة ليشبونا- البرتغال عقد برنامج القيادة الإغناطية (ILP) بحضور أربعة وعشرون شخصًا من ثمان أقاليم. ستة أشخاص فقط يسوعيين. حضر من إقليمنا كل من الأب/ إميل جبرائيل، الأب/ سيمون دويك وكل من السيدة جانين إسبر، والسيدة لينا إسكندر من لبنان، والأخت جوتشيا من الجزائر. في جو من الصلاة، والتفكير الشخصي، والمشاركة قضى المشاركين ستة أيام للتفكير في القيادة من منظور إغناطي، ومن منظور منهجي.
Solidarité en temps de guerre : l’action du CJC au Liban
La guerre nous a tous pris par surprise malgré le déploiement des navires américains dans le Golfe persique. La majorité des libanais ont cru que le Liban sera épargné mais cela n’a été qu’une illusion. Le Liban est entré à son tour en guerre et de nombreuses régions libanaises ne cessent de subir les bombardements israéliens causant le déplacement d’un million de personne environ. De plus, la flambée des prix du pétrole causée par la guerre irano-américaine, a eu des impacts négatifs sur une économie libanaise déjà à l’agonie. Les prix ne cessent d’augmenter aggravant la crise humanitaire et sécuritaire du pays.
Reflection from the Shelter – Michael Petro
The first people to arrive came from Dahiyyeh and from the closer parts of the South – Bangladeshi and Sudanese individuals and families, fleeing from bombing that had begun over the night. Many of them had stayed with us in 2024 and remembered the hospitality of the Jesuits, the St. Joseph Church and the Arrupe Migrant Center, and the care of the Jesuit Refugee Service over that time.
