As the war in Gaza continues, Israel has launched a war in the West Bank, hidden from the eyes of the world. The Israeli army is carrying out the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank from their homes since 1967. According to OCHA, already over 40, 000 Palestinians have been displaced, and are currently living without shelter, essential services, and healthcare.

Il y a cinq ans, après une période de discernement, nous avons reçu les Préférences apostoliques universelles 2019-2029 (PAU) du pape François. Dans sa lettre de mission à la Compagnie de Jésus, le pape François aconfirmé que ces préférences s’alignent sur les priorités de l’Église telles qu’elles sont exprimées par le magistère ordinaire du pape, les synodes et les conférences épiscopales, en particulier depuis la publication de l’exhortation apostolique Evangelii Gaudium.

Le décès du pape François a profondément marqué la consulte provinciale qui s’est tenue à Beyrouth du 21 au 23 avril. Tout juste après le début de nos travaux, la triste nouvelle tombe : le pape François est mort ce lundi de Pâques. Il nous a fallu prendre un moment de silence et de recueillement avant de pouvoir reprendre la consulte. Ensuite en concertation avec le P. Denis Meyer, préfet de l’église St-Joseph, une messe de requiem a été décidée pour le mardi 22 avril. Une grande foule est venue se recueillir avec nous et rendre grâce pour le don qu’a fait le Seigneur à son Église dans la personne du pape François.

Living and studying in Rome has given me a privileged vantage point into both the international character of the Society of Jesus and the deep catholicity, the universality, of the Church. Within my own community, I have shared life with Jesuits from every continent, each bringing their own history, theological intuitions, and pastoral practices. This experience has stretched my heart and broadened my mind. At the same time, being in Rome allows me to experience the universal Church not as a distant institution but as a living, breathing communion of cultures and voices.

حتّى هذه اللحظة، لا أعلم ما هو عنوان خبرتي الشخصيّة… ربّما الأنسب في بدايتها كانت ” دعوة الربّ بين رماد الحرب ونور الكلمة”، واليوم وأنا في سنتي الأولى لدراسة اللاهوت، أضع عنوانًا جديدًا، عنوانًا فكريًّا ” البحث عن الله “، أبحث عنه في كلّ مقال وكتاب ومحاضرة.

اليوم نجتمع لنودع رفيقنا في الإيمان والخدمة، الأب بولس دياب، الذي عاش حياته كشهادة حية للإنجيل، محبةً وخدمةً. في هذا اليوم الحزين، نجد عزاءنا في الإيمان بأن رفيقنا الأب بولس قد انضم إلى بيت الآب، حيث لا حزن ولا ألم، بل فرح أبدي في حضرة الرب.

في الأول من شهر نسيان ولمدة ثلاثة أيام أقيمت الندوة الثالثة ضمن برنامج (Inter-noviciat) هذه الندوة التي تجمع بيوت الابتداء في مصر من عدَّة رهبانيات رجاليَّة ونسائيَّة. بعنوان نذر العفة الذي قدَّمه الأب نادر ميشيل اليسوعي.

قام فوّاز يوم الاثنين 24 آذار/مارس 2025 بإبراز النذور الأولى، وكان وقت الاستعداد للنذور مميزًا للغاية. فقد استقبلنا في جماعة القديس أغناطيوس الرئيس العام للرهبنة اليسوعية، وهو اللقاء الذي منحنا فرصة للتأمل والتعمّق في معنى الحياة الرهبانية والنذور.

Après avoir obtenu l’accord pour mon projet de thèse, j’ai dû me prépa-rer pour ma « Lectio Coram ». Selon les normes de l’Institut Pontificale Oriental (PIO), un an après l’approbation du projet, l’étudiant est invité à présenter une conférence publique sur le thème de sa thèse, appelée « Lec-tio Coram », devant une Commission de trois membres nommés par le Doyen. La Lectio prend la forme d’un débat entre le doctorant et la Com-mission. Celle-ci, après une évaluation approfondie, émettra un avis écrit contraignant pour la poursuite du doctorat.

It is both an honor and a privilege to address you today and to share with you the mission, dedication, and ongoing efforts of the CJC family in Zahlé.

Au début, je ne connaissais pas précisément la mission du CJC ni son lien avec les Jésuites. Pourtant, en tant qu’ancienne élève de leurs écoles, je savais une chose : ils ne ferment jamais leur porte à ceux qui frappent. Mais ce n’est que lorsque j’ai commencé à travailler avec eux que j’ai compris la profondeur de leur engagement. J’ai découvert qu’ils ne se contentent pas d’être aux côtés des plus fragiles : ils y sont, pleinement, avec humilité et sincérité, sans chercher ni reconnaissance ni lumière. Ils ne parlent pas de solidarité, ils la vivent.

Venant de Minia le vendredi 21 mars après-midi, le P. Arturo SOSA s’est entretenu pendant une heure avec les responsables du MEJ et de la CVX.

From March 20 to 21, Father Arturo Sosa, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), visited Minia, Egypt, as part of his journey to witness and support the Jesuit mission in the region. This visit highlighted the longstanding commitment of the Jesuits to social, educational, and spiritual development in Upper Egypt, particularly through the work of the Jesuit community in Minia.

The Jesuit community in Amman, Jordan, is made up of three members: one from India, one from Egypt, and one from Malta. Together, they are the smallest group of Jesuits among all the countries that make up the Near East and Maghreb Province (PRO) of the Society.

L’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ) a eu l’honneur d’accueillir, les 18 et 19 mars 2025, le T.R.P. Arturo Sosa Abascal s.j., Supérieur général de la Compagnie de Jésus, pour une visite exceptionnelle marquant à la fois les 150 ans et la Saint Joseph, fête patronale de l’Université.

La visite que le Père Arturo Sosa a faite à la communauté Saint-Ignace a eu un impact profond sur chacun de nous, scolastiques de la Compagnie. Cet impact a dépassé toutes nos attentes. Ce ne fut pas simplement une rencontre pastorale ou une visite officielle, ce fut surtout une rencontre fraternelle.

A few months ago, when bombs were falling on the country and on Beirut, it was uncertain whether I could be with you on this occasion. Yet, I deeply wished it would be possible. Today, I am truly delighted that the situation, which has so profoundly changed since then, allows me to be here. I am very pleased to be able to join you in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut and, through this celebration, to express the deep attachment and esteem of the Society of Jesus.

The celebration of the Feast of Saint Joseph and the 150th anniversary of Saint Joseph University present a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the name of our university and the inspiration it carries.

Dear Rachel,
I have just received horrifying news about what happened in Bethlehem after Joseph, the child, and I left that night… The king’s soldiers came and slaughtered the children without mercy. Neither the mothers’ pleas nor the fathers’ courage could stop them!

As you will be visiting the CJC tomorrow and seeing how the Society of Jesus in Lebanon is responding to this crisis effectively, I would like to share with you how I, as a Jesuit, experience this impoverishment of the Lebanese population on a spiritual and human level.

On the first day when the war escalated here in Beirut, a mother from our parish called me. “Brother, if it gets bad can we come stay in the church?” She her children were living in Dahiyye, a neighborhood that was likely to face heavy bombing if the war picked up.

In the following lines, I will share my personnal experience with the uprising that took place on the midst of October 2019. For those who are coming from abroad, the protests took place here, just few meters away. So, I couldn’t stay in my room and watch the event through my window. The temptation to join the gathered people was so great and noble.

The blast in the port of Beirut was not just one of many that I have experienced, sometimes very closely, as a war child. Beirut blast on 4 august 2020 was an earthquake, an upheaval, an apocalypse.

The October 17, 2019 revolution in Lebanon was a profound experience for me, filled with enthusiasm, contradictions, personal challenges, and deep wounds. From the very first days, I was swept up by the momentum of Lebanese youth dreaming of a better country, free from corruption and systemic injustices. Their energy, determination, and hope were contagious, and I felt immense joy in being among them, sharing their struggle, and marching alongside them in the streets of Beirut and other cities.

Today, I want to share with you how Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour faced and survived some of the worst crises in Lebanon’s history. Between 2017 and 2023, Lebanon experienced political turmoil, economic collapse, social unrest, and national disasters—each one threatening the very existence of its institutions, especially schools. Yet, despite these challenges, Jamhour endured, adapted, and even thrived, thanks to the support of some Jesuits, friends, families and benefactors. Let’s look at how the school navigated each crisis.

I will speak about what the recent war between Hezbollah and Israel stirred within me. Like many Lebanese—perhaps all—I felt a deep and overwhelming uncertainty about what this war would mean for our country. This uncertainty was already deeply rooted, given the more than two-year-long presidential vacuum and the gradual disintegration of state institutions.

La consulte de province s’est tenue à Beyrouth du 31 janvier au 2 février 2025. 3 grands sujets ont marqué les travaux de la consulte : la visite du père général à la province, la Syrie et la formation.

قام الملتقى الثقافي اليسوعيّ في حمص، بالتعاون مع منتدى مساحة الدعوة إلى لقاء حواريّ مع الآباء اليسوعيّين في حمص: مراد أبو سيف، طوني حمصي، إميل جبرائيل بشأن بيان الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة في سوريا “وطننا يتعافى”، وذلك في مركز المخلّص – العدويّة يوم الاثنين ٢٤ شباط ٢٠٢٥. وقد حضر هذه الندوة كثيرون من شركاء اليسوعيّين في الرسالة والصلاة، وكذلك بعض من نشطاء المجتمع، الباحثين عن مساحات مشتركة في وطن هو بأمسّ الحاجة إلى الحوار.

في يوم الأحد الموافق 12 كانون الثاني (يناير)، اجتمع مجموعة من الدارسين اليسوعيين، في مرحلة التدريب الرسوليّ، من مصر ولبنان والولايات المتحدة الأميركية في لقاء عبر الفيديو لمناقشة تجاربهم في الحياة الرسولية والتحديات التي يواجهونها. شارك في اللقاء جوزيف أشرف ورودي خليل الدارسَين في مصر، ومايكل جبريال ومايكل بيترو في لبنان، ودانيال عطالله في سوريا. وذلك تحت إشراف الأب ريكاردو خيمينيز، مسؤول التكوين في الإقليم.

Dans un Proche-Orient tourmenté, plus de 400 000 élèves trouvent une stabilité entre les murs des écoles catholiques francophones. Des lieux d’apprentissage scolaire, de promotion de la francophonie mais aussi de transmission, de résilience et d’espérance.

قرر المجلس العالمي لجماعة الحياة المسيحية (CVX) عقد اجتماعه السنوي الحضوري في مصر من 31 يناير حتى 9 فبراير 2025 في بيت الراهبات الكمبونيات قي المقطم الذي كان حسن استقبالهن لنا أساس نجاح هذا اللقاء. والهدف الأساسي من هذا الاختيار خلق مساحة للقاء الجماعة في مصر والشعور مع الجماعة في الشرق الأوسط.

في جو من الصلاة والتأمل والفرح كان لي فرح لقاء مع حوالي 90 شخصًا شاركوا في الندوة الثامنة عشر التي يعدّها الأب نادر ميشيل اليسوعي ويقدّمها سنويًا ليتبعها بعام نشر كتاب يحمل العنوان نفسه. التقيت مثل كل عام بمن أطلق أنا عليهم أغصان مختلفة في كرمة يسوع وذلك ما بين علمانيين – وأنا منهم – ومكرّسين يعملون في مجالات مختلفة وكذلك ورهبان وراهبات من 15 رهبانية و9 بلدان. عقدت الندوة هذا العام في بيت راهبات القديس يوسف بالعبور من الخميس ٢٣– الأحد ٢٦ يناير ٢٠٢٥. التقينا سويًا نحيي من لم نقابلهم منذ عام أو اثنين نشارك ما وصلنا إليه في حياتنا وخدمتنا ونرحب بمن يحضرون الندوة للمرة الأولى.

“I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church,” we profess in the Creed. But where is the one true Church to be found? The Orthodox claim that theirs is the one true Church, as do the Roman Catholics. Which is correct? There cannot be two true Churches, so it would seem that, to be a member of the one true Church, one has to choose either to be an Orthodox or a Roman Catholic.

More than one of the five Tertians enrolled in the Nicholas Kluiters European Tertianship Programme had to hear that question from friendly companions. Thankfully, the common response was a big smile. Eziokwu, Artur, Shigi, Matthew and Krystian met in Cairo last September for the launching of the 2024-2025 class.

يجتمع المجلس العالمي للـ CVX-CLCمرة كل عام، حضوريا، لمراجعة خطة العمل وتقييم الأنشطة ومناقشة عدة موضوعات أدارية وكذا التمييز في أمور كثيرة تخص الجماعات حول العالم. وعادةً ما يتم هذا اللقاء السنوي في روما. ولكن هذا العام كان الأمر مختلفًا.

Jésuites en Syrie, nous faisons partie du peuple syrien avec lequel et pour lequel nous travaillons. Nos préoccupations sont les siennes, et nos rêves sont les siens… Nous sommes peut-être libérés du régime, mais pas encore de la peur. Nous recherchons le dialogue national, mais la perception que nous avons les uns des autres est encore déformée, car la fraternité a été blessée et ces blessures ne sont pas encore cicatrisées. Aujourd’hui, nous devons emprunter, ensemble, résolument, un chemin de guérison.

We, the Jesuits in Syria, believe that we are an integral part of the Syrian people with and for whom we work. Our concerns are their concerns, and our dreams are their dreams, too… We believe we are free from the regime, but we are not yet free from fear. We believe we are free from the system, but we are not yet free from fear. We seek national dialogue, but our perception of each other is still distorted, as the wounds to fellowship have not yet healed. Today, we need a healing process that we can consciously walk together.

نؤمن نحن اليسوعيّين في سوريا بأنّنا جزءٌ لا يتجزّأ من الشعب السوريّ الّذي نعمل معه ولأجله، فهمومنا من همومه، وأحلامنا من أحلامه… نعتقد أنّنا تحرّرنا من النظام، ولكنّنا لم نتحرّر بعد من الخوف. لقد صدحت الكلمات، ولكنّنا لم نولِ بعد الأولويّة للصالح العامّ. فنحن نسعى لحوارٍ وطنيّ لكن نظرتنا لبعضنا لا تزالُ مشوشةً، إذ لم تلتئم بعدُ جراحُ الأخوّة. لذلك، نحن اليوم بحاجة إلى مسيرةِ تعافٍ نسيرها معًا بوعيٍ.

كان يومًا غنيًّا بالروحانيّة، والثقافة، والفرح في قلب دمشق أقدم عواصم العالم. فبمناسبة عيد اهتداء القديس بولس، أمضى مربّو التعليم المسيحيّ في أديرة الآباء اليسوعيّين في حمص (دير القدّيس يوحنّا فرنسيس ريجيس، ودير المخلّص) نهارًا مميّزًا للاحتفال بالقدّيس بولس رسول الأمم.

“إنّ التقدمة التي يقدّمها أهلنا… لا تقلّ صعوبة عن التقدمة التي نقوم بها لاتّباع المسيح”، هذا هو الردّ الذي أجابني به أحد الآباء اليسوعيّين في أثناء حوار معه قبل دخولي الرهبنة اليسوعيّة، وتفكيري بما يعيشه الأهالي عندما يبدأ ابنهم هذه الرحلة.

Le traditionnel repas annuel de nos parents a eu lieu le vendredi 10 janvier 2025. Cette année, nous nous sommes retrouvés un vendredi, jour de congé, ce qui a permis d’accueillir un plus grand nombre de participants.

A la fin de l’année 2024, fin octobre et début décembre, j’ai accepté de donner deux retraites a des prêtres diocésains, l’une pour ceux d’Assiout et l’autre pour ceux de Souhag. Compte tenu de leur emploi du temps, chaque retraite a eu lieu du lundi au jeudi. Ce fut une expérience enrichissante qui m’a poussé à réfléchir sur ce service d’Eglise.

احتفل مركز الجزويت التربويّ لخدمات الشباب YES (Youth Educational Services) بمرور خمس سنوات على افتتاحه يوم 28/12/2019. ويهدف المركز إلى تكوين شبابٍ واعٍ مفكّرٍ وملتزم. فيستوحي المركز غاية وجوده من روحانيّة الآباء اليسوعيّين التي ترغب في تكوين إنسان لأجل الآخرين ومعهم.

اجتمعت مجموعة “دو ريف” في تونس بين 30 ديسمبر و4 يناير.
كنا 10: 4 من الجزائر، 2 من تركيا، 2 من المغرب، 1 من إسبانيا و1 من إيطاليا. بالنسبة للجزء الأكبر، كنا منتظمين للمجموعة، باستثناء “فيكتور راموس”، الذي شارك لأول مرة.

تمّ وضع هذه الدورة مع الأخت نهى دكّاش، من القلبين الأقدسين، وهي كانت باكورة الدورات النفسية الروحية التي أطلقها ”مركز الفنون الروحية“ في بكفيا منذ عام ٢٠١٢. منذ ذلك الحين تقام هذه الدورة دون توقّف كلّ سنة في لبنان، حتّى خلال فترة الكورونا. وسرعان ما خرجت من نطاق الحدود إلى سوريا والأردن والبلاد المجاورة.

À l’occasion du tricentenaire de la division du patriarcat grec (rūm) d’Antioche en 1724, un ouvrage collectif intitulé La division du patriarcat grec d’Antioche et la construction des identités confessionnelles orthodoxe et catholique a été publié. Fruit de la collaboration entre le Pontificio Istituto Orientale (PIO) et le Centre de documentation et de recherches arabes chrétiennes de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (Cedrac – USJ), cet ouvrage, édité sous la direction du père Željko Paša, S.J., du professeur Bernard Heyberger et du père Ronney el Gemayel, S.J., regroupe les contributions de 18 chercheurs spécialisés.

L’année 2024 a été particulièrement violente dans notre région.  Nous avons vu la destruction de Gaza, et la violence dans la Cisjordanie. La région frontalière israélo-libanaise a été continuellement bombardée avec des centaines de milliers de personnes qui ont dû quitter leurs habitations des deux côtés de la frontière. Fin septembre 2024 cette guerre a franchi un nouveau palier avec des bombardements israéliens de la banlieue sud, étendus rapidement à tout le Liban où il y avait des membres de Hezbollah.

La consulte de province s’est réunie du 29 novembre au 1er décembre 2024 à Saint-Joseph à Beyrouth.

إن الساعات الأولى من سقوط النظام في سوريا، اختلطت فيها ثلاثة مشاعر لدى العديد من الناس ومنهم نحن. تمازج كلّ من الصدمة تّجاه سرعة الأحداث، والفرح تّجاه عبءٍ أُزيل عن صدر الحريّة، وتساؤلٍ لا يخلو من القلق عمّا ستحمله الأيّام القادمة.

At Christmastime, the Church celebrates new beginnings—Christ’s coming into the world, when everything is made new. But as Christians, we also believe that these new beginnings are a continuation—the fulfillment of God’s tireless work among us, an answer to ancient promises and eternal yearnings. This December, the Jesuits of Lebanon had the chance to celebrate a development in one of our missions in exactly this way—a change that is at once new and familiar, fulfilling old promises and building new opportunities.

« Marcher aux côtés des pauvres et des exclus » est la deuxième des quatre Préférences apostoliques universelles, l’une des orientations que suivent les jésuites dans leurs missions pour servir au mieux le monde et l’Église. Elle récuse toute recherche d’élitisme et demande, non pas de travailler pour ou en faveur des pauvres, mais de marcher à côté d’eux, à côté de notre monde et des personnes blessées dans leur dignité, en promouvant une mission de réconciliation et de justice.

En cette année où nous fêtons les 150 ans de l’USJ, il est bon pour tous ceux qui y sont engagés de s’arrêter pour regarder le chemin parcouru et envisager l’avenir. C’est d’ailleurs ce qu’a demandé le P. Général à toute la communauté universitaire de l’USJ à travers « l’Examen jésuite ».

Après plus de 30 heures de voyage commencé à Mexico, le 1er novembre 2021, je suis arrivé à Alger. C’était encore l’époque de la pandémie, et chaque voyage devenait une véritable odyssée. Avec une grande joie, les jésuites m’attendaient à l’aéroport, car cela faisait déjà plusieurs années qu’aucun nouveau jésuite n’avait rejoint cette mission. Enfin, j’étais là.

مع انتهاء فصل الصيف الذي حمل لي العديد من الأحداث البارزة، وعلى رأسها رسامتي الكهنوتية، عدت إلى باريس لمواصلة دراستي. أنا الآن في السنة الثانية من برنامج الماجستير في اللاهوت الرعوي العملي في “Facultés Loyola Paris”. اخترت العائلة موضوعًا لرسالتي، مستلهِمًا من رسالة البابا فرنسيس “فرح الحبّ”. يتجلى هدفي الأساسي في استكشاف رؤية الكنيسة الحالية للعائلة، بما تتضمنه من تحديات وتساؤلات، ثم البحث عن طرق جديدة لمرافقة العائلات التي تواجه صعوبات، وتساعدها على السير في طريقها رغم كل العقبات.

ما أحياه هذه الأيام هو انتظارٌ بالمعنى الحرفيّ؛ أترقّب وأنتظر الكثيرَ من الأمور؛ أنتظر انتهاء هذه المرحلة الأولى من دراسة اللاهوت في باريس، وأنتظر تحديد مصير المرحلة القادمة من الدراسات، ما هي وأين ستكون؟ أنتظر أيضًا الفروغ من رسالة التّخرّج ومناقشتها؛ كما قلت: “أنا أنتظر الكثير”.

وصلتُ إلى مدينة ميلانو بإيطاليا منذ خمسة أشهر، وأشعر مؤخرًا أنّني وجدتُ الإيقاع اليوميّ المريح بين الدراسة والحياة الجماعيّة والصلاة، بعد فترة من التأقلم والاكتشاف والتي بدأت بتعلُّم اللغة، حيث شعرتُ كأنّني طفل يسعى إلى التعبير عن نفسه والتواصل مع الأخرين بكلمات قليلة وصِيَغ بدائية، إنها خبرة مُثابَرة وصبر. في حين كان اكتشاف جمال المدينة ومعالمها الثقافيّة خبرة غنيّة وممتعة، خصوصًا مؤسّساتها الفنّيّة وتقدير مجتمعها للفنون، وهو السبب الرئيسيّ الذي جعلني اختارها كمكان لدراسة الفنّ، فبها “أكاديميّة بريرا للفنون” حيث بدأتُ دراساتي العليا في النحت، وبها أيضًا “مؤسسة سان فيديلي الثقافيّة والفنّيّة” للرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة التي أعيش في جماعتها.

Je suis heureux de partager avec vous, Jésuites et amis de la Compagnie, ma contribution au dialogue œcuménique entre l’Eglise catholique et l’Eglise assyrienne de l’Orient.

Cette année est notre dernière année au Collège… tout est si différent de ce que nous aurions pu imaginer. Avant tout, faisons un petit retour en arrière. Il est naturel d’affirmer que le Liban a connu assez de bouleversements au cours des années précédentes, allant du soulèvement populaire de 2019, à la pandémie de Covid-19, à l’explosion du port de Beyrouth le 4 août 2020. L’apogée de tous ces malheurs serait sans aucun doute la guerre qui éclate dans notre pays et qui a su se faufiler petit à petit dans tous les aspects de notre vie. Chaque jour où cette guerre fait partie de notre quotidien est une lutte. Et pourtant, même parmi la destruction et la terreur, il est possible de voir l’espoir et le courage d’une communauté inébranlable : celle du Collège Notre Dame de Jamhour.

اجتمع اليسوعيون يوم السبت 16 تشرين الثاني في دير سيدة النجاة ببكفيا. بدأ اليوم بفترة صلاة تلتها محاضرة بعنوان: “من أجل لاهوت الرجاء في ظلّ الأزمة الإقليمية الحالية”، ألقاها الأب باسم الراعي. تحدّث الأب باسم الراعي عن معنى الرجاء السياسي، وكيف أنّه مرتبط بالإيمان المتجذّر في الواقع. الإيمان المسيحي يتوجه نحو الواقع ويتجاوزه في الوقت نفسه، وبالتالي فإن لاهوت الرجاء هو لاهوت يقرأ الواقع وينتقده.

Deux fois par an, jésuites en Algérie, nous nous retrouvons pour prier et réfléchir sur notre mission dans ce pays, en lien avec la Province, en lien avec l’Eglise locale aussi. Nous étions 11 compagnons, dont 3 de la communauté de Constantine, 7 de la communauté d’Alger, et Paul, évêque émérite, habitant à Annaba.

دخلَ بيشوي إيليا جاد عبد المسيح قبلَ سنتين وأيام إلى بيت الابتداء في مصر. جاء من القوصية، مصر (1992)، ليميّز دعوته ويثبتها، ليتأمّل حياته ويجد المعنى الذي يرغب في أن يعيشَ من أجله. قضى سنتي الابتداء، ثمّ أتى إلى لبنان ليكملَ تكريسه بإبرازه للنذور الأولى في الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة، ويدخل في جسم الرهبانيّة رويدًا رويدًا ليتكّون وينمو في دعوته. كانت الخطوة الأولى الاحتفال بالقدّاس الإلهيّ، حيث نذرَ فيه الفقرَ والعفّة والطاعة الدائمة في الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة، يوم الاثنين 4 تشرين الثاني-نوفمبر 2024، في كابيلّا القدّيس يوسف في دير الآباء اليسوعيين في الأشرفيّة.

فهو دعوة لمسيرة شخصية وجماعية، دعوة لإكتشاف رسالتنا، فنختار أن نحيا معه .. نختار أن نحيا بكلمته، ومحبته، وبقوة الغفران المعطاه لنا.

Depuis le début des attaques israéliennes sur le Liban, nous nous sommes mobilisés, aumônerie de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth et association Al Mazeed (Magis) – ONG rattachée à l’USJ – pour venir en aide aux familles déplacées.

From the early beginnings of the Society of Jesus, dating back to the time of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Rome has held a unique position within its mission, particularly in the realm of academic engagement. Even today, Jesuits in Rome are deeply involved in universal apostolic works, with a significant focus on academic efforts at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical Biblical Institute, and the Pontifical Oriental Institute. These institutions, historically entrusted to the care of the Society, are directly overseen by the Superior General, with the Father Delegate acting on his behalf. They attract students from all over the world, offering formation both at the undergraduate level (First Cycle) and in specialized programs at the graduate level (Second Cycle and Doctoral studies).

L’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ) a marqué un tournant important dans son histoire avec l’inauguration du Hall des donateurs sur le Campus des sciences médicales (CSM), rue de Damas, en présence, notamment, de l’ancien président de la République libanaise, M. Amine Gemayel, du ministre de l’Éducation nationale et de l’Enseignement supérieur, S.E.M. Abbas Halabi, du ministre du Tourisme, S.E.M. Walid Nassar, représenté par Mme Joëlle Hajjar, des responsables de l’USJ et d’une foule de professeurs, d’étudiants, de donateurs et d’amis de l’USJ.

The Amman Marathon takes place annually once a year. It was held in the morning on 4th October,2024. The starting line for 10 km was opposite the Royal cultural center. The finish line was Downtown at the Roman Amphitheater.

في إطار التعاون بين المدرسة والسفارة الفرنسية بالقاهرة، قام سعادة سفير فرنسا في مصر اريك شوفالييه بزيارة مدرسة العائلة المقدسة، يوم الخميس الموافق 10 أكتوبر ٢٠٢٤، بمناسبة بدء السنة الدراسية الجديدة في مصر.

La dernière consulte de province a eu lieu à Beyrouth du 21 au 23 septembre 2024.

نحن فريق من الراهبات الممرضات من ١٠ رهبانيّات مختلفة اللواتي يعملن في مجال الصحة في أماكن عديدة في مصر وبدأ الأب نادر ميشيل معنا هذه الندوات من حوالي ٢5 سنة إيمانًا بدور الراهبة الممرضة كحضور إنسانيّ مسيحيّ وسط مجتمع بحاجة أن يرى ويختبر الرحمة والشفقة والمحبّة في مستوصفاتنا المختلفة  .

تعرّفوا إلى المبتدئين الثلاثة الجدد الذين يعيشون اليوم في دير القديس أثناسيوس، وهو بيت الابتداء للرهبنة اليسوعيّة في الشرق الأوسط والمغرب العربيّ، الذي يقع في شبرا ـ القاهرة.

بعد زيارتَين قصيرتَين للشام خلال شهرَي أيّار وتموز، وصلتُ من جديد يوم 5 آب لأستقرّ في بيت القديس ألبيرتو اليسوعيّ – جرمانا، وأبدأ فترة التدريب الرسولي ضمن مسيرة تكويني في الرهبنة. بعد أن تلقّيت اقتراح الكتابة عن خبرتي، تساءلتُ عن أي خبرة سأكتب وأنا ما زلتُ في البداية، لذلك قرّرتُ أن أؤجّل الكتابة إلى أقصى تاريخ ممكن، وها أنا أكتشف في الأسبوع الأخير ثمرة مهمّة أقطفها وأرغب أن أتكلّم عنها.

On the night of September 23, a Sudanese and Ethiopian family from our parish arrived at the church. They had been hearing that bombing and airstrikes were picking up in the south, and they were afraid of what that might mean for Dahiyye, where they lived. Every week, the pastor of the parish, Fr. Dan Corrou, SJ , opens the Sunday mass for migrants and refugees with the words, “Welcome Home.” When they began to fear, this family remembered those words, and came to the church.

A short introduction of the new novices

أمرٌ أحبّه في الرهبنة اليسوعيّة، وألمسه لدى العديد من اليسوعيّين، وهو رغبتهم باللقاء والتواصل، معزّزين وحدة الجسد الرسوليّ. كلّنا نعرف قصّة فرنسيس كسفاريوس الذي كان يحتفظ بإمضاءات رفاقه في الرهبنة، كرمزٍ للوحدة رغم المسافات التي تفرضها الرسالة. ونحن إن كنّا نتشارك هذه المقالات، فأحد أهدافنا هو تبادل الأخبار والخبرات وتعزيز وحدة الجسد الرسولي الذي يمتدّ على مساحات واسعة.

Le mois d’août était l’occasion de visiter le Mexique, ma famille et les jésuites de la Province. Après avoir passé deux semaines de vacances en famille, à Torreón, dans le nord du Mexique, je me suis déplacé à Guadalajara (Oued el Hadjara), où la Compagnie de Jésus dirige deux collèges et une grande université (ITESO), où des scolastiques des diverses provinces d’Amérique Latine et des Etats Unis étudient le premier ou seconde cycle de Philosophie et Sciences Sociales.

Du 4 au 17 août, nous avons accueilli 9 jeunes à Ben Smen, 5 Algériens (3 filles et 2 garçons), 2 Ougandais, 1 Kényan et 1 Angolais : ces 4 étudiants subsahariens étant arrivés il y a moins de 6 mois pour apprendre le français avant de commencer leurs études universitaires ; ils ont eu des cours complémentaires organisés par Lucien dans le cadre de l’aumônerie des étudiants. A signaler aussi que 2 seulement étaient catholiques, les autres évangéliques ou adventistes ; les Algériens étaient musulmans, plutôt sympathisants du christianisme. Le programme était simple : travail manuel le matin avec aussi une équipe cuisine ; repos l’après-midi avec un temps de relecture partagée ; chants et danses le soir.

وصلت في شهر أيلول/سبتمبر من السنة الماضية إلى مدينة نامور Namur في بلجيكا وذلك من أجل القيام بخدمات رعوية أساسية في أبرشية إقليم نامور. أبرشية نامور لها انتشار كبير في ريف بلجيكا الناطقة باللغة الفرنسية ويبلغ عدد كنائسها (رعاياها) حوالي ال ٧٥٠ كنيسة يخدمها ٢٣٠ كاهن أكثر من ثلهم أجانب من أصول أفريقية بمعظمهم، ومن الثلثين المتبقيين من الكهنة البجيكيين تبلغ نسبة من هم من أصول أجنبية أكثر من النص.

هذا العام، في لقاء اليسوعيين القطري، والمعتاد في الأسبوع الأخير في شهر أغسطس/آب، كانت الدعوة أكثر حرية لمن يرغب في المشاركة، خاصة وأننا أعتدنا أنه في حالة انعقاد لقاء اليسوعيين الأقليمي لا نقيم لقاء قطري. ولكن طرحت الفكرة أن يكون اللقاء القطري كنوع من الأجازة/ الراحة سويا لمن يرغب مهما كانت نسبة المشاركين. ولكن ما حدث هو أن غالبية اليسوعيين المتواجدين في مصر شاركوا في هذا اللقاء، فقد كنا 21 شخصاً، علامة تعبر عن رغبة حقيقية في التواجد معا، نكون سويا برغم انشغالاتنا واختلافاتنا. مما حدا الرئيس الإقليمي أن يغير من برنامجه ليكون في هذا اللقاء/الأجازة مع القطر المصري.

En tant que responsable de la catéchèse pour toutes les communautés catholiques de Damas et Banlieue et, récemment de l’ensemble de la Syrie, deux sujets essentiels me préoccupent : la formation des catéchètes et le programme.

« Sauver la proposition de l’autre », voici le point de départ intellectuel aussi bien que spirituel qui m’a fait rentrer dans une mission chère à la compagnie, à savoir annoncer l’Évangile à la frontière. Je suis reconnaissant à P. Michel Fédou qui m’a accompagné vers cette découverte pendant mes études au Centre Sèvres. Grâce à son approche dialogale, j’ai appris l’appréciation du patrimoine copte, en m’enracinant dans mon Église. Cette approche vise à approfondir la compréhension de l’autre sans abandonner notre identité en évitant un syncrétisme superficiel afin d’atteindre une rencontre authentique.

اختتم مركز الجزويت الثقافيّ بالإسكندرية فعالياته السنوية لبرنامج التكوين وبرنامج التطوع لعامه الماضي، في حفل أقيم بحضور مجموعة من الشباب المشاركين وعدد من الشخصيات الفاعلة في المجتمع المدني والثقافي. وقد تم الاحتفاء بالإنجازات والمبادرات التي قام بها الشباب على مدار العام، مع التركيز على إسهاماتهم في مجالات العمل الثقافي.

من ١٠ إلى ١٦ حزيران/يونيو ٢٠٢٤ التقينا في دير مانريسّا قرب برشلونة، المبنيّ فوق “مغارة الروائع” التي كتب فيها مار اغناطيوس أسس الرياضات الروحية. من لبنان كنتُ مع الأب هشام، إضافة إلى أكثر من سبعين أتوا من الأقطار الأربعة: الأميركيّتين وأقاصي آسيا وأستراليا وأفريقيا، بالإضافة طبعاً إلى أوروبا.

في يوم الأحد الموافق 28/ 7/ 2024، وأثناء اللقاء الإقليميّ في دير سيّدة التعزية، تعنايل، وبحضور جميع اليسوعيّين المشاركين في اللقاء، أحتفل الأب ماجد وليم بإعلان نذوره الإحتفاليّة في كنيسة الدير. ترأس القدّاس الأب مايكل زمّيط الرئيس الإقليمي وإلى جانبه الآباء: فيكتور أسود مساعد الرئيس العام، جوزيف نبيل ممثل جماعة المنيا وجوزيف فوزي الكاهن الجديد والكاهن الناذر ماجد.

La célébration des vœux solennels du Père Jad Chébly, le 22 juillet 2024, en l’église du Collège Notre Dame de Jamhour, fut un moment exceptionnel, concluant de manière significative la journée de repos des scolastiques jésuites réunis en session à Bikfaya.

في شهر مارس/آذار الماضي كنتُ قد وصلتُ إلى قناعة أنّه من المفضّل تعليق البرنامج للسنة المقبلة نظرًا إلى أنّ سبعة مشاركين انسحبوا بسبب إمكانيّة الحرب.

Environ 85 jésuites de la Province du Proche-Orient et du Maghreb, qui comprend l’Algérie, l’Égypte, l’Irak, la Jordanie, le Liban, le Maroc, la Syrie, la Terre Sainte et la Turquie, se sont réunis dans la Bekaa libanaise, au monastère de Taanayel, pour réécouter les appels et les défis de leurs pays. C’est au cœur de la spiritualité ignatienne de voir la réalité qui nous entoure, de bien écouter ses besoins, de la mettre dans notre prière, de discerner l’appel du Seigneur, de choisir et de décider ce qu’il faut faire selon “Sa volonté”.

Approximately 85 Jesuits from the Near East and Maghreb Province, which includes Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, the Holy Land and Turkey, gathered in the Lebanese Bekaa in the monastery of Taanayel to listen again to the calls and the challenges of their countries. It is at the heart of Ignatian spirituality to see the reality around us, to listen well to its needs, to put this in our prayer, to discern the call of the Lord, to choose and decide what to do according to “His will”.

إجتمع ما يُقارب ٨٥ يسوعيّ من إقليم الشرق الأدنى والمغرب العربيّ الّذي يضمّ: الجزائر ومصر والعراق والأردنّ ولبنان والمغرب وسوريا والأراضي المقدّسة وتركيا، في البقاع اللبنانيّ بدير تعنايل، ليُصغو من جديد إلى نداءات بلدانهم وتحدّياتها التي تمرّ بها. فمن صُلب الروحانيّة الإغناطيّة هي أن نرى الواقع من حولنا، ونسمع جيّدًا إلى احتياجاته، لنضع ذلك في صلاتنا، ونُميّز دعوة الربّ، فنختار ونُقرّر ما يتوجّب علينا  فعله.

نلتقي ونزيد تعارفًا ومودّة في كل اجتماع أو مناسبة تجمع الرفاق من القطر اللبنانيّ، وهكذا كان في نهاية هذه السنة مع لقاء مميّز في دير سيّدة النجاة – بكفيا، حول موضوع كان يهمّنا جدًّا أن نتشارك فيه، وهو الأزمة اللبنانيّة في أبعادها السياسيّة والاجتماعيّة والإنسانيّة.

Le mercredi 19 juin a eu lieu la clôture du procès diocésain en vue de la béatification de Nicolas Kluiters. Le provincial aurait du y participer mais était retenu en Egypte : il n’y avait pas d’avion ! Le supérieur de la communauté était lui aussi en Egypte.

J’enseigne à l’IER (Institut d’Education Religieuses) à Sakakini, Le Caire, aux étudiants de la deuxième année, la matière des « Sacrements ». Les locaux actuels de l’Institut, fondé en 1994 [quoique les tous débuts aient eu lieu au début des années 1970 dans d’autres lieux], se trouvent au quartier de Sakakini (à 3 Km de notre Collège jésuite de Faggalah), dans l’enceinte de l’église latine des Pères Comboniens.

J’arrivais à cette étape de ma vie avec un sentiment de gratitude et de confiance profonde envers le Seigneur. Je rendais grâce à Dieu pour ces 53 années de vie (depuis 1971), ces 27 années de vie religieuse (depuis 1997) et ces 12 années de sacerdoce. Comme le dit le psalmiste : « Que de merveilles le Seigneur fit pour nous ! Nous étions comblés de joie ! » (Ps 125, 3).

Pendant quatre jours, du 9 au 12 juillet 2024, nous nous sommes retrouvés, Jad Jabbour et moi, à Malte pour participer à une session de formation organisée pour les formateurs dans la Compagnie. Nous étions une bonne douzaine de jésuites en provenance de provinces d’Europe et de Proche Orient. Le thème de cette année « Towards a Healthy Jesuit Life » a attiré moins de personnes que celui de l’année dernière qui portait sur « Affectivity and Sexuality » !!!

“لأننا به نحيا ونتحرك ونوجد” كان هذا شعار المؤتمر الذي بدأناه في تمام السادسة من مساء يوم الخميس، حيث أتى الرفاق من عدة محافظات من مصر، ليبدأوا سويا هذه المسيرة، كإخوة يتحركون معا، لتلقي كلمة، لمسة، نفحة من الله، كلٍ بحسب احتياجه. وجدنا مجموعة الاستقبال في انتظارنا بالفاكهة والمشروبات المثلجة، ثم بدأنا على الفور بالتعارف الذي لم يعرفنا فقط بالموجودين حولنا ولكن بذواتنا أيضا: كيف أتينا؟ ماذا نريد وما هي تطلعاتنا في هذا المؤتمر؟ وبدأنا بالدخول في العمق شيئا فشيئا وساعدتنا سهرة الصلاة على تهدئة الضجيج الذي كنا نحمله بداخلنا عندما وصلنا.
