Bridging Worlds: A Jesuit’s Journey Through the Scriptures, Rome, and the Arabic Christian Tradition
Living and studying in Rome has given me a privileged vantage point into both the international character of the Society of Jesus and the deep catholicity, the universality, of the Church. Within my own community, I have shared life with Jesuits from every continent, each bringing their own history, theological intuitions, and pastoral practices. This experience has stretched my heart and broadened my mind. At the same time, being in Rome allows me to experience the universal Church not as a distant institution but as a living, breathing communion of cultures and voices.

حتّى هذه اللحظة، لا أعلم ما هو عنوان خبرتي الشخصيّة… ربّما الأنسب في بدايتها كانت ” دعوة الربّ بين رماد الحرب ونور الكلمة”، واليوم وأنا في سنتي الأولى لدراسة اللاهوت، أضع عنوانًا جديدًا، عنوانًا فكريًّا ” البحث عن الله “، أبحث عنه في كلّ مقال وكتاب ومحاضرة.
ندوة نذر العفّة
في الأول من شهر نسيان ولمدة ثلاثة أيام أقيمت الندوة الثالثة ضمن برنامج (Inter-noviciat) هذه الندوة التي تجمع بيوت الابتداء في مصر من عدَّة رهبانيات رجاليَّة ونسائيَّة. بعنوان نذر العفة الذي قدَّمه الأب نادر ميشيل اليسوعي.
Lorsque Nader m’a demandé quelques lignes pour dire comment je vis cette période qui nous met un peu en dehors du temps, me sont venus à l’esprit les premières lignes d’une fable :
« Un lièvre en son gîte songeait ; car que faire en un gîte à moins que l’on n’y songe… ! »
Le confinement s’est adouci et nous pouvons sortir de nos chambres ; mais la vie n’a pas repris tout à fait son cours normal : le covid 19 est encore là, et la crise politique et économique pèse de tout son poids sur nous. N’ayant ni les moyens ni les raisons de sortir, ma chambre et toute la Résidence était devenu pour moi un « gîte ». Et que faire en un gîte à moins que l’on n’y songe. Suivre la politique au jour le jour, m’apparaissait vain et fastidieux, non que je me désintéresse de ce pays, de son avenir et celui de toute la Région, mais n’ayant pas les moyens d’y faire quelque chose je me suis mis plutôt à écouter la rumeur du monde.
Il y a la presse bien sûr, mais j’ai préféré entendre cette rumeur par l’internet, puisque nous avons le privilège de l’avoir, et spécialement par YouTube. C’est un excellent vecteur pour faire parvenir de quoi le monde bruit. Bien sûr il y a beaucoup de parasites qui peuvent nous distraire, beaucoup d’insignifiance aussi, mais on y trouve des perles qui nous éblouissent et nous émeuvent ; On peut en tirer « du vieux et du neuf » qui peuvent alimenter notre réflexion et notre prière, et ainsi nous pouvons élargir nos horizons aux dimensions du monde.
Impossible de tout citer, mais ce que j’ai entendu sur l’énergie, le climat et l’économie a complètement changé ma manière de voir. Je pensais être « écologique », mais je pensais dans la mauvaise direction. La situation est beaucoup plus grave et plus complexe que je ne le pensais et les évènements récents le démontrent. Or il faut que la pensée change pour comprendre et accepter les restrictions que l’on devra s’imposer. Dans le sens de ce que disait le pape dans son Encyclique « Laudato si ! » : « Pour que la norme juridique produise des effets importants et durables, il est nécessaire que la plupart des membres de la société l’aient acceptée grâce à des motivations appropriées, et réagissent à partir d’un changement personnel. » LS 211.
Nous sommes menacés par des catastrophes impensées jusqu’à ce jour et la quatrième Priorité Apostolique, nommée dans la lettre du Père Général, ne devrait pas être vite oubliée. Notre « maison commune » est en fait notre « arche de Noé commune » et elle risque de sombrer dans cette tempête que nous avons provoquée. C’est tout notre système d’éducation que nous devons repenser. J’ai appris qu’en utilisant l’interner j’augmente mon empreinte carbone, mais en attendant qu’y puis-je à moins de me couper du monde.
Et puis il y a le téléphone ; c’est un moyen qui peut nous éviter des déplacements en ces temps difficiles. Même en temps ordinaire il m’est arrivé de donner des retraites par ce moyen. Mais je me refuse à utiliser d’autres « moyens sociaux » que WhatsApp. Trop envahissants.
Dans les limites de la Résidence, il y a quelques traductions à faire et quelques petits services à rendre à la communauté : préparer les prières du lundi, veiller que nos deux chapelles ne manquent de rien, que nos messes de midi trente soient célébrées dans la simplicité, le recueillement et le respect, pour maintenir entre nous les liens indispensables qui disent que nous sommes un corps.

النذور الأولى للدارس فواز سطّاح
قام فوّاز يوم الاثنين 24 آذار/مارس 2025 بإبراز النذور الأولى، وكان وقت الاستعداد للنذور مميزًا للغاية. فقد استقبلنا في جماعة القديس أغناطيوس الرئيس العام للرهبنة اليسوعية، وهو اللقاء الذي منحنا فرصة للتأمل والتعمّق في معنى الحياة الرهبانية والنذور.
La « Lectio Coram », une expérience académique ALL’ORIENTALE
Après avoir obtenu l’accord pour mon projet de thèse, j’ai dû me prépa-rer pour ma « Lectio Coram ». Selon les normes de l’Institut Pontificale Oriental (PIO), un an après l’approbation du projet, l’étudiant est invité à présenter une conférence publique sur le thème de sa thèse, appelée « Lec-tio Coram », devant une Commission de trois membres nommés par le Doyen. La Lectio prend la forme d’un débat entre le doctorant et la Com-mission. Celle-ci, après une évaluation approfondie, émettra un avis écrit contraignant pour la poursuite du doctorat.

La visite que le Père Arturo Sosa a faite à la communauté Saint-Ignace a eu un impact profond sur chacun de nous, scolastiques de la Compagnie. Cet impact a dépassé toutes nos attentes. Ce ne fut pas simplement une rencontre pastorale ou une visite officielle, ce fut surtout une rencontre fraternelle.

On the first day when the war escalated here in Beirut, a mother from our parish called me. “Brother, if it gets bad can we come stay in the church?” She her children were living in Dahiyye, a neighborhood that was likely to face heavy bombing if the war picked up.
