Ce ne fut pas simplement une rencontre pastorale ou une visite officielle, ce fut surtout une rencontre fraternelle.

A few months ago, when bombs were falling on the country and on Beirut, it was uncertain whether I could be with you on this occasion. Yet, I deeply wished it would be possible. Today, I am truly delighted that the situation, which has so profoundly changed since then, allows me to be here. I am very pleased to be able to join you in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut and, through this celebration, to express the deep attachment and esteem of the Society of Jesus.

I have just received horrifying news about what happened in Bethlehem after Joseph, the child, and I left that night… The king’s soldiers came and slaughtered the children without mercy. Neither the mothers’ pleas nor the fathers’ courage could stop them!
منذ سنة استلمت إدارة مسكن الطلاب (Foyer USJ) التابع لجامعة القدّيس يوسف والكائن بين حرم “العلوم الطبّية” وحرم “الابتكار والرياضة”. يحتوي المبنى على 6 طوابق منقسمَين إلى جزئَين : جزء للشباب وعددهم 36، وجزء للبنات وعددهم 63.
يتضمّن الطابق الأرضي مكتب المدير، ومنصّة استقبال (يشرف عليها 4 موظّفون يتناوبون ليلاً نهارًا على إدارة المسكن لوجيستيًّا)، وصالون للطلاب والزوّار، وكابيلا.
يُؤمَّن القدّاس كل يوم الساعة 7.00 صباحًا، والخميس 12.30 ظهرًا، يحضره بعض الطلاب وأيضًا بعض موظّفي الجامعة.
تتمحور الحياة في “الفوايه” بين الدراسة (إلى حدّ كبير) والراحة؛ غالبًا ما يلتقي الطلاب بعد الجامعة أو الدرس في الباحة الخارجيّة والتي تحتوي على طاولة “baby foot” وكرة طاولة (ping-pong) وبانكات عديدة، ممّا يجعل من هذا المكان منفذًا ضروريًّا للتنفّس والراحة…
يتخلّل خلال السنة لقاءات مختلفة يجتمع فيها الطلاب: حفلة تعارف في بداية السنة، لقاءات وديّة أو ترفيهيّة في بعض المناسبات (بعد الامتحانات خصّيصًا)، ندوات أو حلقات حوار مساءً حول موضوع ديني او اجتماعي يهمّ الشباب.
هذه الرسالة، إضافةً إلى الجانب الإداريّ منها (استقبال الطلاب، تسجيلهم، التعامل مع الموظفين، متابعة بعض الشؤون الماديّة،…) تكمن خاصّةً في أهميّة الحضور والإصغاء إلى الطلاب ومشاركتهم اهتماماتهم وهمومهم؛ كما كيفيّة السعي إلى خلق جوّ من الألفة والصداقة بين شبيبة آتية من مناطق مختلفة، وبيئات مختلفة، وطوائف مختلفة.
