Ce ne fut pas simplement une rencontre pastorale ou une visite officielle, ce fut surtout une rencontre fraternelle.

A few months ago, when bombs were falling on the country and on Beirut, it was uncertain whether I could be with you on this occasion. Yet, I deeply wished it would be possible. Today, I am truly delighted that the situation, which has so profoundly changed since then, allows me to be here. I am very pleased to be able to join you in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut and, through this celebration, to express the deep attachment and esteem of the Society of Jesus.

I have just received horrifying news about what happened in Bethlehem after Joseph, the child, and I left that night… The king’s soldiers came and slaughtered the children without mercy. Neither the mothers’ pleas nor the fathers’ courage could stop them!
لقد سُئلت كثيرًا قبل الرسامة عمّا إذا كنت مستعدًّا أم لا؟ في الواقع لم تكن لديّ إجابة محدّدة، وتساءلت شخصيًا عن السبب. فقلت ربّما لأنّي أنتظر وأتطلّع بالأكثر إلى الكهنوت، وربّما لأنّه لن تكون لديّ الفرصة لأمارس مهامي كشمّاس إنجيليّ لفترة كافية. ولكنّ الإجابة هي أنّي بالفعل أمارس تقريبًا أغلب مهام الشمّاس الإنجيليّ منذ أكثر من عشر سنوات. فقد كانت لديّ الفرصة كمكرّس أن أشارك في قراءة الإنجيل وتحضير عظات في مناسبات مختلفة وحتّى تقديم المناولة في مناسبات مختلفة. كل ذلك كان تحضير وممارسة فعلية لدوري الليتورجي كشمّاس إنجيليّ، وكأنّ الربّ من خلال الكنيسة قد أعطى صفة ” شماس إنجيليّ” لما قد سبق بالفعل وأعطاني النعمة لعيشه وممارسته.
قبل الرسامة تملّكني الإحساس بأنّني غير مستحق، وكأنّي أقول مع النبيّ: الويل لي أنا نجس الشفتين. كيف أقف أمام الربّ؟ وفي الصلاة كنت أراجع الفترة السابقة من حياتي واكتشفت كيف أنه بالرغم من التحدّيات المختلفة فيها، كنت أجد نفسي أفكّر في خدمة الربّ في جميع الناس، وكيف كنت أستغرق في التفكير في الوسائل المختلفة التي يمكن أن أستخدمها كخادمٍ للربّ لمجده وخدمة النفوس. كانت الإفخارستيّا وسرّ المصالحة أبرز ما ينير تفكيري ويولّد لديّ أحلامًا حول خدمة الربّ في النفوس.
في وقت الرسامة كان جواب الربّ على مخاوفي، إذ شعرت بالربّ يقول لي أنا اخترتك، بالرغم من عدم استحقاقك، اخترتك وأرسلك. فهمت كيف تحوّل نظرة الربّ التلميذ الذي ينكره إلى رسول.
قد دار الحديث أيضًا، بما أنّي أسكن في جماعة كبيرة ومتنوعة التقاليد، حول التغيير الذي تحدثه الرسامة الإنجيليّة فيمن ينالها، هل هو تغيير أنطولوجيّ أم وظائفيّ؟ بالنسبة إليّ، الانتقال من الحالة العلمانيّة إلى الحالة الشمّاسيّة هو تحقيق لاختيار الربّ الذي يسبق تاريخي من ناحية، وتكريسي في الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة، وتقدّمي لنوال الدرجة الإنجيليّة ولاحقًا سرّ الكهنوت هو النَّعم على نداء الربّ، وتغيير خدميّ وظائفيّ من ناحية أخرى.
