Agression/abus et spirituel, voici deux notions qui semblent appartenir à deux univers diamétralement opposés. Et pourtant, des comportements transgressifs sont aussi à déplorer dans le cadre de l’accompagnement spirituel, pouvant dans certains cas aller à jusqu’à des agressions sexuelles.
My name is Gerry Baumgartner, I am an Austrian Jesuit and 27 years old. Since July 2021 I have been living and working in Homs/Syria after preparing myself for about one and half years for this mission. From the first moment I set foot into this community I felt that this is a truly special place in the heart of this city that was so much damaged during the war. I was sent here to work and help in the youth ministry in our two centres in Homs. My main responsibilities are the pastoral activities with the university students and the high school students.
The first few months here were challenging. Studying Arabic and living in this disastrous economic situation here in Syria, where people lack even the most basic goods like fuel, Diesel, electricity, heating, water and food, were very hard for me. Despite all the difficulties we are facing I am extremely blessed that I was sent to serve here. My main source of consolation is the work with the many young people that I encounter every day. It is a joy to accompany them on their way with God, helping them to find the truth about themselves and learning from them what it means to live a truly Christian life of service, community, and love in such hard circumstances.
I am grateful for my life here and the community of great Jesuits I am privileged to live with and I am looking forward for the next time to come full of camps, formation weekends, celebrations and meetings here with the youth of Homs.

“In early November, a delegation of Jesuits in PRO (Frs. Jad Chebly, Gabriel Khairallah, Doug Jones, and Dan Corrou) visited the campus of Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q). They were hosted by Fr. Ryan Maher, S.J. (UEA), who currently teaches at GU-Q and is the only Jesuit on staff. They had the chance to meet with a number of administrators, faculty members, and students. The delegation was invited as part of ongoing discussions between GU-Q, USJ, and JRS as to possible ways to deepen collaboration in teaching, research, and internships.

La présence de la Compagnie de Jésus à Laâyoune, terre de frontière et d’espérance
À l’extrême sud du Maroc, dans la Préfecture apostolique du Sahara, la Compagnie de Jésus a ouvert une nouvelle étape de sa mission au service de l’Église locale et des personnes en transit. Depuis septembre 2024, la communauté Bienheureux Luc Dochier s’est déplacée de Nador à Laâyoune, répondant à l’évolution des routes migratoires.
