My name is Gerry Baumgartner, I am an Austrian Jesuit and 27 years old. Since July 2021 I have been living and working in Homs/Syria after preparing myself for about one and half years for this mission. From the first moment I set foot into this community I felt that this is a truly special place in the heart of this city that was so much damaged during the war. I was sent here to work and help in the youth ministry in our two centres in Homs. My main responsibilities are the pastoral activities with the university students and the high school students.
The first few months here were challenging. Studying Arabic and living in this disastrous economic situation here in Syria, where people lack even the most basic goods like fuel, Diesel, electricity, heating, water and food, were very hard for me. Despite all the difficulties we are facing I am extremely blessed that I was sent to serve here. My main source of consolation is the work with the many young people that I encounter every day. It is a joy to accompany them on their way with God, helping them to find the truth about themselves and learning from them what it means to live a truly Christian life of service, community, and love in such hard circumstances.
I am grateful for my life here and the community of great Jesuits I am privileged to live with and I am looking forward for the next time to come full of camps, formation weekends, celebrations and meetings here with the youth of Homs.

بين التحدي والنعمة خبراتُ عامٍ بين الخدمة والدراسة
عندما بدأت مرحلة التمييز لاختيار التخصص الذي سأتابع فيه دروسيّ اللاهوتيّة، كان هناك مُؤشراتٌ كثيرة تقودني نحو القانون الكنسيّ، سواء من خلال رغبة بعض المُكوّنين، أو مَيْلي الشخصيّ. ومع ذلك، لم يكن هذا الخيار يثيرُ الحماسة لدى كثيرين. فكانت ردودُ الفعل تتكرر كلَّما ذَكرتُ هذه الرغبة: ماذا سيفعلُ الِيسوعيّ بدراسةِ القانون الكنسيّ؟ كيف يمكن لهذا التخصص أن يخدم رسالتنا؟. كنتُ أسمعُ هذه الأسئلةَ وغيرها، وربما حملت بعضها في داخلي أيضًا.
خبرة شهر أروبي (Arrupe): شهر التحضير للكهنوت
في مطلع شهر يوليو 2026، اجتمعنا نحن الثلاثة: مايكل، وحسام، ورامز، وبدأنا خبرة شهر أروبي (Arrupe)، أي «شهر التحضير للكهنوت»، برفقة الأب ماجد رضاني، في دير الآباء اليسوعيّين بالإسكندرية.

Nous étions 81 participants, dont trois jésuites de notre Province, Zaki, Maged et moi. C’était mon premier séjour à la « Cova Sant Ignasi », même si je m’y étais rendu avec le groupe des scolastiques du Proche-Orient en 1999. Ce n’était qu’une courte visite. Cette fois, grâce aux groupes de prière matinale, j’ai pu visiter les lieux ignatiens. Cer-tains de ses lieux m’ont pris par surprise : là où Ignace a passé huit jours en extase, et là où il a sauvé une poule noyée… Tant pis pour les miracles, la vue du magnifique Montserrat faisait ma joie de chaque matin.
