This past July, Campion Hall (Oxford University) hosted the first Pedro Arrupe Forced Migration summer school. In this beautiful setting, steeped in history and tradition, I joined other scholastics from around the world to better understand issues around forced migration, the response of JRS, and how it is situated in Catholic Social Teaching…

It was a fruitful encounter, and I was especially grateful for an in-person meeting, after two years of COVID.  I enjoyed hearing the perspectives of Jesuit brothers and collaborators who, despite working in different contexts, shared experiences and provoked questions that resonated with my own. In what can sometimes be a challenging apostolate, it was a great point of solidarity to know that there are others engaged in similar work. JRS is the only global work of the Society of Jesus, and I think that how we address migration can serve as a model for how to approach other issues that transcend national boundaries such as the environmental and economic crises.

Many of the Jesuits and lay collaborators expressed a deep interest and concern for the events occurring in our region. There was, for example, a shrine at the Jesuit Church in London for those in the Middle East. The labours and travails of all here are not forgotten.
