A Brief Chronicle of Father General’s Visit to Algeria, 2026

The Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ accompanied by his assistant Víctor Assouad, SJ arrived in Algeria on April 29. During their visit, which lasted until May 3, they explored various projects in Algiers and Constantine and met with our local collaborators and students. To better understand the significance of this visit, I would like to share three key moments that reflect who we are—and who we aspire to be—as the Society of Jesus in this region.
On the morning of April 30, Father General met with students and staff at the Centre Culturel Universitaire (CCU). He heard testimonies highlighting the center’s commitment to academic and personal accompaniment. Through the stories of tutors, religious members, and students, the CCU was described as an “oasis of trust” and fraternity—a place where intellectual growth meets human warmth, fostering harmony among different nationalities and religions. In the afternoon, the visit continued with a collective photography exhibition titled “Existence”, which illustrated how art serves as a vital bridge to reconcile diverse cultures, languages, and spiritualities.
On May 1, a public holiday, approximately eighty people gathered at the Ben Smen Spiritual Center for our traditional “Picnic Among Friends.” During this day of community and reflection, our companion Víctor Assouad, SJ led a dialogue on the mission of reconciliation and the Universal Apostolic Preferences. The profound and brotherly exchange between Christian and Muslim attendees was deeply moving. In the Algerian context, such open dialogue and peaceful coexistence are signs of hope, reaffirming the Jesuit mission of closeness and freedom.
On May 2, the visit moved to Constantine, where Father General visited the Dilou Library (specializing in comparative religions) and the Nibras Center, which supports children’s education. Following a meeting with local Jesuits, there was a shared reflection on the future of our mission in Algeria. Despite being a small minority in a predominantly Muslim society, Father General’s visit confirmed our calling to serve the Algerian people through peace and shared humanity, consolidating the essence of Jesuit work as a fragile yet deeply meaningful presence.
Early on May 3, we bid farewell to Father General and Víctor Assouad,SJ as they departed from Constantine airport for Rome to continue their mission.

وصل الأب العام أرتورو سوسا، اليسوعيّ برفقة مساعده الأب فيكتور أسود، اليسوعيّ إلى الجزائر في 29 نيسان/ أبريل. وخلال زيارتهم، التي استمرت حتى 3 أيّار/ مايو، اطّلعوا على مشاريع مختلفة في الجزائر العاصمة وقسنطينة، والتقوا بمعاونينا المحليين وطلابنا. لفهم أهمية هذه الزيارة بشكل أفضل، أود أن أشارككم ثلاث لحظات رئيسية تعكس هويّتنا — وما نطمح أن نكونه، نحن الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة في هذه المنطقة.

في صباح يوم 30 نيسان/ أبريل، التقى الأب العام بالطلاب والموظفين في المركز الثقافي الجامعي (CCU) واستمع إلى شهادات تسلط الضوء على التزام المركز بالمرافقة الأكاديمية والشخصية. من خلال قصص الموجهين والأعضاء والطلاب، وُصف المركز الثقافي الجامعي بأنه ”واحة للثقة“ والأخوة — مكان يلتقي فيه النمو الفكري بالدفء الإنساني، مما يعزز الانسجام بين مختلف الجنسيات والأديان. في فترة ما بعد الظهر، استمرت الزيارة بمعرض صور جماعي بعنوان ”الوجود“، والذي أوضح كيف أن الفن بمثابة جسر حيوي للتوفيق بين الثقافات واللغات والروحانيات المتنوعة.

في 1 أيّار/ مايو، وهو يوم عطلة رسمية، تجمع حوالي ثمانين شخصًا في المركز الروحي بن سمن لحضور ”نزهة بين الأصدقاء“ التقليدية. خلال هذا اليوم المخصص للتواصل والتأمل، قاد رفيقنا فيكتور أسود، اليسوعيّ حوارًا حول مهمة المصالحة والأولويات الرسولية العالمية. كان التبادل العميق والأخوي بين الحاضرين المسيحيين والمسلمين مؤثرًا للغاية. في السياق الجزائري، يُعد هذا الحوار المفتوح والتعايش السلمي علامات رجاء، تؤكد من جديد على رسالة اليسوعيين المتمثلة في التقارب والحرية.

في 2 أيّار/مايو، انتقلت الزيارة إلى قسنطينة، حيث زار الأب العام مكتبة ديلو (المتخصصة في الأديان المقارنة) ومركز نبراس، الذي يدعم تعليم الأطفال. بعد لقاء مع اليسوعيين المحليين، جرت تأملات مشتركة حول مستقبل رسالتنا في الجزائر. على الرغم من كوننا أقلية صغيرة في مجتمع يغلب عليه الطابع الإسلامي، أكدت زيارة الأب العام دعوتنا لخدمة الشعب الجزائري من خلال السلام والإنسانية المشتركة، مما يعزز جوهر العمل اليسوعي كحضور هش ولكنه عميق المعنى.

في وقت مبكر من يوم 3 أيّار/ مايو، ودّعنا الأب العام وفيكتور أسود، عند مغادرتهما مطار قسنطينة متجهين إلى روما لمواصلة مهمتهما.
