My name is Luke and I’m happy to introduce myself to the province. I was born in Washington State in the western part of the United States. At university I studied French, theology, and peace studies. After university I studied theology again, earning a master’s degree in theology before entering the Society of Jesus in 2021. In the Jesuit novitiate I had many rich experiences, including serving as a chaplain at a local jail and working as a teacher at a Jesuit high school on one of the small islands of Micronesia. I took vows in 2023 and have spent the last few years at Fordham University in New York City where I earned master’s degrees in economics and political economy.
During my time at Fordham, I had several experiences that shaped my desires and sense of mission. In the Bronx (New York City), I accompanied migrants in the United States. In Zambia I worked at a Jesuit social research center and learned more about how the Church can accompany the poor, especially those who are easily forgotten or, as Pope Francis often said, are “on the margins” of society. St Ignatius reminds Jesuits that Jesus is always ahead of us, working in the world. My own experience is that my apostolic work in the Society is always an opportunity to encounter Jesus who is already present, loving, and accompanying.
For this next stage of my formation, I am missioned to regency with Jesuit Refugee Service in PRO province. I am studying Arabic now and will soon take on a greater role at JRS as my Arabic improves. I am very grateful for this opportunity, as well as for the kind hospitality and welcome I have already received from so many Jesuits and non-Jesuits here in Beirut. I look forward to meeting more Jesuits, collaborators, and friends.
